If he is skipping the last major work he must not think this horse has much of a chance to win

UPDATE
BACKSIDE UPDATE: Saturday workouts
The Courier-Journal

Undefeated Florida Derby winner Barbaro worked a half-mile in a snappy 46 seconds at dawn Saturday at Churchill Downs in preparation for the May 6 Kentucky Derby. The Churchill Downs clockers caught Barbaro galloping out five eigths of a mile in a strong 59 and 2/5 seconds and six furlongs in 1:12 1/5 under assistant trainer Peter Brette.

Sunriver worked six furlongs in 1:13 3/5 in company with the older horse Harlington shortly after the track opened at 6 a.m. Retired hall of fame jockey Angel Cordero was aboard Sunriver, who needs a defection from the current Derby probables to get in the overflow field.

Sweetnorthernsaint worked six furlongs in 1:11 3/5 with stablemate Sweet Valid. Jockey Calvin Borel worked Sweetnorthernsaint because rider Kent Desormeaux did not show after being expected to fly in from New York Friday night.

Wrongly

I myself overslept this morning and missed my tee time of 6:15.  Maybe it was it was the number of shots, maybe it was some hot blonde that distracted or just maybe it was a bad snooze alarm.

Uh, maybe we should focus on the work itself which tells me all I need to know.  Doesn\'t Desormeaux have a history of being somewhat quirky?

Quirky is an understatement. I have lived and died with Kent D over the last 20 years. He is my go-to guy. He goes into these high and low patters every few years - which is probably just like any other jock or any person for that matter. If you watch his ride on Fu-Peg in the 2000 Derby it was the most flawless, masterful ride I\'ve ever seen.

The 1:11 work is really all I will focus on too. Can;t wait to see the move this AM on TVG\'s \"Works\" show...

Thanks for the update!:-)

Now everybody wants to get on your horse Uncle Buck. At least your bet is already down. Still think he\'ll be double digits though.

A week before the race your horse is scheduled for his one serious work on the track and the jockey oversleeps with his cell phone turned off?

That would be too much for me. That has every indication of imbibing too much in something and I don\'t want that kind of representation on my horse with the big dance a week away. Theres plenty of good jockeys out there Mr. Trombetta. Jockeys that don\'t have a mount. I\'d highly recommend Jeremy Rose. He can get a horse to relax and he has the big race in his resume. Maryland connections don\'t mean you have to tolerate Maryland poor behavior. Dump the bum before he burns you again.

Chuckles, are you actually Gene Short. Jeremy Rose , give me a break !! What\'s he won this year (How many Derbys has he won ?). IMO Rose cost Afleet Alex the Triple Crown. Desormeaux\'s had two legitimate shots to win the Derby and cashed\'em both. I don\'t understand the general anti-Desormeaux attitude you espouse. If it wasn\'t for apparent PR problems (NOT TALENT), Desormeaux would have won at least 4 Derby\'s by now. I guarantee you he wouldn\'t have tanked the rides on Empire Maker, Point Given or Afleet Alex , Captain Bodget or Victory Gallop\'s  as they\'re riders arguably did. If the guy over-slept big deal. Just for curiosity\'s sake, what\'s your opinion of PVAL and Garrett Gomez, since you\'re ready to take Kent off for , over-sleeping ?

I have no idea what you\'re referring to with Afleet Alex. Other than not being aware of the path bias, but not many were til the next day.

Jockeys don\'t win races. They lose them. Desormeaux is not in his right head. The bum overslept despite being in a hotel with wake up service. I\'m personally contacting Trombetta over this one.

I don\'t bet jockeys. I don\'t tolerate them either.

I do share your sentiment about Alex Solis. 2 minutes is a long time for him not to make a mistake and I have full confidence he\'ll find a way to louse up Bro Derek.

Just back to hotel from the shed.. There was no harm done. Kent overslept and tried to reach Trombetta repeatedly.. Mike showed me his cellphone with \"Kent, Kent, Kent, Kent\" on it, but the phone never actually rang... (I\'ve been having the same trouble with mine.)

It worked out fine. Borel was perfect and Willie Martinez helped with Fleet Ballad, SNS\'s workmate who goes in an ALW on the undercard. They gave Mike EXACTLY what he asked them for down to within a fifth of a second for the internals. Trombetta couldn\'t have been happier and if something were to happen to Desormeaux between now and next Saturday, he has another backup rider.

Trombetta, Ted Theos, Ernesto and Gordon were all thrilled with the work after a couple of anxious moments. In the meantime, Saint takes everything in stride and is as happy as can be. He\'s a delight to be around.

Theos headed back to MD this p.m. and I\'ll be taking the group to dinner tonight to give them a taste of the Derby atmosphere.

In other Barn 42 news, Jazil and Flashy Bull are next door to Saint and look good. Jazil in particular has filled out really nicely since I saw him last at Palm Meadows. Still as gentle as can be... Bull is dappled out and \"ready\", but Kieran is really concerned now about getting him in with Ramsey talking about wheeling Dawn of War back next week after today\'s Trial, and Mr. Triester potentially getting the Don\'t Get Mad treatment as well. McLaughlin said \"I\'d never do it, but I could enter Henny Hughes, Like Now and get Discreet Cat entered and then scratch them all Thursday. It\'s time to think about using the Breeders Cup system for this race.\"

Elsewhere, Cause to Believe did not work well today, and Bluegrass Cat made a less than wonderful impression as well. I missed Lawyer Ron out there.

Chuckles, this is only my opinion. One could say , that Afleet Alex bounced, which he did, but, if Afleet Alex isn\'t completely  stopped into the turn, he would would have had a commanding lead, into the lane, much like Real Quiet did , in his Derby win and would have won the race with a great ride, despite not getting the best number. I believe that Victory Gallop, Empire Maker, Aptitude, Captain Bodget, all lost the Derby despite running faster, or at least as fast as the winner. The best comparison to a rider making a difference in the Derby, is Empire Maker vs Fusaichi Pegasus. Empire Maker was ridden like he was much the best , and lost in what I percieve as a gutless ride by Bailey. Fusaichi Pegasus was ridden in a manor that would have been percieved , as a bad ride if he had lost, and yet Desormeaux rode the race, saving all the ground that he could, as if he were on a longshot. That\'s all I\'m saying.

alm

Tell me Desormeaux gave Real Quiet a good ride in the Belmont.

Then watch the race again and watch him moving all over the horse\'s back, yanking his head one way and another, destroying his rhythm and stride while the horse was tiring in the stretch.

Watch the race and don\'t focus on Victory Gallop closing, because that\'s all Desormeaux did.  He lost by an inch because he was riding the other horse...not his horse.

As for Jeremy Rose, he was the best riding jockey at Gulfstream this season.  Not the winningest, but the best rider.  He\'s unbelieveably consistent and patient.

Wait a minute. What do you mean theres no harm done? Why was Desormeaux in Louisville? Is he idle until next Saturday? If you\'re saying the connections think theres no harm done, thats their prerogative. That doesnt mean there was no harm done, nor no cause for concern.

I don\'t care how many times he tried to call Trombetta after he was late. Thats irrelevant from my perspective as a potential SnS backer. Does Trombetta really accept he missed the work by \"oversleeping\"? Say it ain\'t so? Seriously, whats his position on that? I don\'t think a professional jockey in his right mind misses that work. Is it just me or is it totally unreasonable to say:

\"Oh, well, thats just rockhound Kent. No harm done. We\'ll let him ride regardless\"

This is an omen. Thank you Horsethor.

Monarchos

Good to get an informative post , as opposed to wild speculation. Good to hear Kent wasn\'t out trying to rob any unsuspecting cab drivers or on a drug or alcohol binge.

Wrongly

Jeremey Rose?  Ba ha ha. You are a Clown.  How about his ride in the Ben Ali?

\"Noble Causeway - Closer than usual and well placed in hand near the inside, angled three or four wide approaching the stretch. was five wide for the drive, then, after the rider misjudged the finish and rose prematurely at the alternate finish line a sixteenth out, was not ridden the remained and narrowly held the show position on his own courage.\"

Ba ha ha ha.

Desornoshow must go. He blew his chance. Gary would only need a couple of warmup rides to dust off the rust and he would be ready willing and able. Unlike the aforementioned.

Lester Piggot did it a few years after five years in the can. Gary has spent five months on the TVG set with Schrupp, Rudolph and Co.

Can\'t be much worse.

And then on second thought......lol
