Ask the Experts / race (not racing) and the Derby

Here\'s an interesting article I came across about the role of African-Americans as jockeys, trainers, and owners in the Derby:

SoCalMan2,
You understood my question perfectly, and your response is really helpful. It gives me a very good procedure for developing my own odds line.
I appreciate the time you took to do this. From the days when you were in Moscow (right?) I remember you as someone who was thoughtful and responsive (and pretty smart too).
Best to you,
Mike

I appreciate the reply, but it doesn\'t bring me much closer.
Of course I know that a starting point might be to divide the percentages equally. Obviously no-one believes they all have an equal chance. How about a next step?
How do you define your particular tiers? And where do you go from there?
I suppose in some bottom tier you might think none had a better than 5% chance. But taken with the rest of the percentages, everything must add up to 100. It\'s all the rest that present me with the conundrum.

Can anyone give me a methodology for determining that a horse\'s chances to win a race are 8% (or any other percent)?
If you think that\'s a dumb question, please don\'t respond. Just think it. But I\'d really like to know how to go about making the actual line you speak of.
Thanks,
Mike
PS: If you want to respond but don\'t want to take up the forum\'s time with it, you can talk to me by e-mail.

Sekrah,
I want to thank you for putting yourself out there. It really helps me from being discouraged about my own handicapping. I hope that nice 7-1 winner pulled you out for the day.

Ask the Experts / Re: Nasal strip on per Alan Sherman

Not wanting to be left of that last comment, I recall in the early nineties that some (other) competitive road runners began using them and touting their benefits. I don\'t recall whether the strips caused these guys\' times to improve, and the strips seemed to disappear after a few years.

Ask the Experts / Re: Ground Loss

Alm,
How do you get ground loss in a straightaway? I can only see a right triangle with a hypotenuse (the presumed ground loss) not very different from the other long side.
And if that\'s not it, what is it and how do you measure it?

Ask the Experts / question on genetics
September 01, 2013, 05:27:43 AM
Can any of you tell me how a horse\'s characteristics are derived? From the sire? From the dam?
For example, when BRIS gives data on percent first turf, there are percentages for both sire and dam. Which is relevant? Or are both?
And where can I go for corroborating studies.
Thanks.

Miff,
Just to keep your Italian right, when you say \"from Pisano Cuomo,\" you are saying \"Cuomo, from the city of Pisa.\"
I\'m guessing you meant to say \"from paesano Cuomo,\" i.e., \"countryman\" Cuomo, or \"fellow Italian-American\" Cuomo.
Non volevo offenderti.

Ask the Experts / Gulfstream today: can someone explain this?
January 03, 2013, 04:14:30 AM
In today\'s 7th at Gulfstream, a horse named Concert Stage is running. He ran December 30,under the ownership of Zilla Racing Stables and Linda Rice.
According to the BRIS chart, he was claimed by Einestein Duran, trainer Giuseppe Giuseppe Iadisernia. But here he is today, listed in the BRIS PPs as running for Zilla Racing Stables and Linda Rice again.
If both things are correct, then it would appear the horse was claimed and then resold within the space fo four days. Likely?
