If you read this board the only movies ever made were Godfather 1-2-3 and Goodfellas.

I loved Casey\'s Shadow.

TGJB

Agree. My vote for best racing movie. Without using a search engine, who directed it and what else did he make?

My vote goes to \"Let It Ride\" for best horse racing genre movie.

TGJB

Like I said, if it\'s not directed by an Italian, horseplayers don\'t watch it.

Casey\'s Shadow was directed by Marty Ritt, who directed Paul Newman in Hud, among other things. If you haven\'t seen that one, shame on you.

Check out the cast of \"The Grifters\". 1990!!!!  I still remember racetrack scenes were filmed in Arizona?????  Not California.

JB:

It is an ifamnia that you would mention the inexplicable and imminently
forgettable GF 3 in the same sentence with the two classics.

Speaking of organized crime/New York/racetrack themed movies, one of my favorites is
\"Pope of Greenwich Village\", with racetrack footage from both Monmouth and Tampa Bay
Downs. Paulie (Eric Roberts) has some interesting theories about thoroughbred
breeding, and grumbles that his partner in horse ownership has selected silks which
will make the jockey look like \"some fag partying out on Fire Island...\". Paulie\'s
description of how to leave a party after being angered by a wife or girlfriend is
rather memorable, snarling to the imaginary girl \"you get your coat on fast and you
don\'t say goodnight to nobody\".

Geraldine Page had a couple of short scenes which were powerful enough to result
in an Oscar nomination, and Darryl Hannah, as usual, was tall, blonde and wooden.
I think the general unpopularity of Mickey Rourke and Roberts has prevented this
movie from being viewed by more people.

The only good thing to come out of GF3 was Sofia Coppola\'s decision to give up acting.

Connecting a couple of dots here, one of the best films with a race track setting is the noir heist classic, \"The Killing,\" starring Sterling Hayden, who also portrayed the dirty cop, McCluskey, in Godfather I, in which he got his just desserts from Michael Corleone.  \"Leave the gun, take the cannoli.\"  \"The Killing\" was a maiden breaking effort from legendary filmmaker, Stanley Kubrickolio.

nice choice Richie - worth watching just for the \"Summer Wind\" soundtrack (boy does that one bring back some amorous memories..)

I always think of Sterling Haydens finest hour as the Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove.

I warned you about the Italians on the board.....you don\'t listen, capo dost!

True, but I think she more than atoned for those sins with \"Lost In Translation.\"

In the realm of racing/gambling movies, Robert Altman\'s \"California Split\" is phenomenal, worth seeking out if you haven\'t seen it.

I totally agree, Papa. I didn\'t really mean it as a slam against her. Richie mentioning Darryl Hannah\'s wooden \"acting\" made me think of Sofia in GF3 (those scenes were pretty hard to watch). I meant the comment more as a slam against the movie, with the \"good\" to come out of it really being her directing career. \"Lost\" is a beautiful movie. Also concur on California Split (along with many other Altman movies).
