Subtle put down. Sounds like he got you.  ;)

Slow horses have a way of making trainers look bad.

SO TRAINING MEANS? OBVIOUSLY NOT MUCH. HES BEEN DOING IT FOR A LONG TIME. MAYBE TRY PUTTIN DEM PIGGYS IN CLAIMERS WHERE THEY CAN WIN

Cub,

If you spent a few months observing the top trainers in the am, you would be underwhelmed and disillusioned.Do you really believe that, for example, Kool Aid drinking Chad Brown is more horseman than say Alan Jerkens? CB wins in the 25% range,AJ like 10%.

90% the horse(ability, soundness, resiliency),5% the trainer(and good help),5% the vet(referring to the legal side of the game)

If it was 90% the horse, then the people with the most money would win 99% of the races.

The trainer / vet is well above that 10% figure.

\"If it was 90% the horse, then the people with the most money would win 99% of the races\"

Box,

Not even close, biggest losers in the game are the ones that spend the most. No one spent as much as Sheik Mo(just one example)with so little to show.

That\'s my point, are you saying you can\'t buy the best horses and that it\'s luck?

miff

\"Buy the best horse\"

Box,

If anyone could come close to figuring that out, they would dominate racing, no one has come close.

Weanlings, yearlings and unraced 2yr olds cannot be pinpointed for ability/resiliency/soundness. Absent that, \"they\" buy breeding/athleticism and physical correctness. Most of the time, that does not work out.History littered with hundreds of millions of $ spent on young unraced horses that could not outrun a fat man.

Take a look at how many young maiden claiming races you see with horses that were purchased for six figures...scary!Buying babies, tougher than trading commodities on Wall Street.

5% the vet? You are joking right? I\'ll say it again when these new supertrainers are being watched and scrutinized on big days they can\'t even get an effort let alone a win.Another great showing by Pletcher in the Breeder\'s Cup. Best laugh was all of his \"budding superstars\" couldn\'t even answer the bell[Cross Traffic and the one that was entered in the mile]. But don\'t worry he will be back to negative 2\'s and 4\'s when he gets to Fla. I don\'t even want to start another debate on Verrazano. Fastest sheet horse in the BC mile. Beat nothing but tomato cans in the two races at Mth.

Boscar Obarra

That may all be well and true, but I doubt many would agree that the trainer is 5% or anything like that.

good horse + bad trainer = slug

cubfan0316

how do you become a bad trainer? one would think after trying numerous things u would figure out what it takes to get your horse to run. or why would u train?
