Sustained speed at 7F or a 1 turn mile

Found this to be a good indicator of who might be able to get a 1 1/4 particularly when looking at 2 yo form. Woody Stephens mentions this in his book, specifically to 3 yos who can press or wire at a mile. Who\'s going to argue with Woody?

What?  Just because he got lucky and won the Belmont 5 straight years?  Not only did he win the Classics, he was a classic.

I think this is accurate.  Another way to put it, horses that can go out and lay down methodical 12 sec 1/8ths usually have a great chance to get the classic distances.  ESK, END, DM and Drosselmeyer come to mind this year off the top of my head.

1:36 - 1M -solid 50K claimer, ALW horse

1:48 - 1 1/8 Gr1 stakeswinner

2:00  1 1/4 - Secretariat, souped up track winner (Monarchos)

2:24  1 1/2  - SECRETARIAT
