Cove, I thought you added a lot to the discussion. Remember, it\'s a 6 game series - Derby, Preak, Bel, Jim D, Hask, and Travers. The work we put in here could very well lead to big scores down the road, as it has in past years on the forum.

Stay involved my friend.

covelj70: humbling game.

My wife asked me why I was still so upbeat leaving the track and I said, \"because one day that could be our horse that no one gave a chance to that wins the big one and she just gave a little smile and knew just where I Was coming from.\"

today was really painful from a gambling standpoint and humbling for me from an ego standpoint but it did remind me once again why I love this game so much.

covelj70: Thanks man, appreciate that and great perspective on the big picture.

I will keep firing away for sure, this board and discussion is terrific.  Absolutely love it.

Frank: I put up a Blutarsky, ZERO POINT ZERO. But it was nice to see a Woodbine maiden claiming graduate win the Kentucky Derby.

TGJB: Then I\'m in good company. Don\'t make it any less expensive, though.

covelj70: This is the single best post I have ever read.

I might have to order animal house on PPV tonight in the hotel given that my wife is passed out from too many mint juleps (wish I were kidding about this).

TGJB: Actually, there\'s a scene in that movie that applies to the situation with your wife-- angel on one shoulder, devil on the other...

Frank: One of the funniest scenes ever. I wish I could quote it here but this is too much a family site.

smalltimer: Was the actor in that scene Willie Turner or Willie Tailer?

number5858: My only tickets that weren\'t zero were the consolations on the Oaks/Derby DD and Oaks/Wood/Derby pick 3 for the combo with I want Revenge.

covelj70: can\'t get this image out of my head...I am definitely ordering up the movie on PPV...lol

Silver Charm: Thanks for the optimism MD. Today was a total wipe out for me. Tons of fun but nocasheenotickeee.

But its still the Derby and sometimes that is built into the Budget.

I will be regrouping for Preakness Day and go from there. Today was such a complete X I\'m a \"Recovery Play\" until we get the confidence back.

toppled: After getting kicked around on Oaks day, I was headed towards one of my all time worst days when Mine That Bird won the Derby.  Fortunately, once I knew the 13th would stay on the turf, I went to work on it Saturday morning.  I spotted a much more logical sheet play in the last race. If anyone stuck around for race 13, the winner was completely logical if you gave him any benefit of the doubt that he could transfer his dirt/poly #s to turf.  The fact that former trainer Shug had tried to turf him earlier & got rained out eased my question of why no turf in his first 9 races. A 5 yo going against a bunch of 3s & a couple of 4s with a poly number that would crush the field if he could even come close on turf was worth the shot. Especially since his bounce off his top came two weeks later & now he had over a month\'s rest. Since I had totally overbet the Derby, I overbet a much more logical choice & while I lost $ for the weekend, got a touch over the break even point for Saturday.
My point is that there was a very playable race two races after the Derby, but the lure of the Derby probably made a lot of people (at least from the point of the $19 mutual) miss a golden opportunity because this race was so late in the day.  This also taught me that it\'s better to overbet a race that is much easier to handicap where a logical horse has to do something a little different than a 19 horse field where just about every one of them is going to be asked to be doing something different-especially with yesterday\'s track condition.  If a future Derby comes up wet & virtually the whole field doesn\'t have wet Churchill experience, I\'m backing way off.
