Funny Cide

I didn\'t cash yesterday\'s race (I haven\'t been this cold in many years), but I think this has been a great horse to bet against. He\'s been overbet on numerous occasions because of his reputation. Yesterday was another opportunity.

Just another example of horses that can get a mile and a quarter at certain tracks and not at others. Run that race at Belmont and I doubt if EVENING ATTIRE beats FUNNY CIDE.

You\'re just not going to get a mile and a quarter at Saratoga unless you have the stamina. Speed alone will not get it done...something to think about when contemplating the chances of LION HEART and PURGE on Saturday.

Good Luck,

Can I bring myself to back The Cliffs Edge and get burned again, that is my quandry for this weekend

Interesting point regarding Funny Cide and 10F.  I bet againt him a couple of times already, but that wasn\'t part of my thinking. Maybe it should have been.

If Lion Heart goes off the favorite and wins at 10F you can be sure I will be ripping up some large tickets. :-)

Can we bring Dollar Bill back from the dead?

Obviously, Funny Cide gets overbet every time he runs and he was overbet again on Sunday but I am not convinced that the distance had that much to do with his defeat. He pressed a solid pace 3/4-wide throughout, which is a very tough way to win any race, particularly one at 10f against a horse (the winner - Evening Attire) that is about 2 pts faster at the weights (2 pts is about 4 lengths at 10f which was pretty close to the margin of victory). My guess is that Funny Cide ran a new top despite the loss (or at least paried his top - we will have to wait and see what fig TGJB gives him) and that would be the third time that FC has run a top going 2 turns at distances at or close to 10f (Derby, Preakness and Sunday).

Go the NYRA site and watch the 1998 Travers and Coronado\'s Quest. It\'s about quality speed, not cheap speed. If Lion Heart runs near his top (~-1) and doesn\'t lose ground, he\'s a winner.

Chris,

Like I said, I never thought of Funny Cide as having problems with the 10F distance. I thought he ran very well also, but he did weaken very slightly in the Peace Rules race also. Maybe he can get it, but it is not optimal????

Before I go any further Chris and Mall congrats on your big weekend and good luck coming up. The competition should be worried.

>I think this has been a great horse to bet against.

Your right about that, but not necessarily to root against. He tries every time to the best of his ability and a lot fans like him. I have been in a couple of different wagering sites where it seemed a third of the joint was cheering him on coming down the stretch.

Yes he is two for eight but the Mass Cap was tough beat and so was the Suburban. Speaking of the Suburban look at how poorly Peace Rules ran next out, Newfoundland and Colonial Colony. The owners are good guys, the fans root for the horse, and the trainer is humble and classy. Racing needs as much of this as it can get.

One thing is for sure they will never be able to take away his Derby and Preakness wins.

Even though the Miami Herald sure tried.

Upper Nile

While your on the NYRA site you can watch Holy Bulls\' 94 Travers which also fits the profile of a quality speed Travers victory.  I\'m not so quick to agree with your assessment of Lion Heart however.  I just downloaded Saturday\'s Saratoga TG sheets so now I have 3 days to over analyze the card.

Phil

Shanahan--

Didn\'t Frankel already try that???

Ezgoer89--

You may end up being correct. I\'m not sure I would want to back a son of Tale of the Cat at 10f at Saratoga. On the other hand, he looks to be the controlling speed in a relatively short field.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Silver Charm

Didn\'t Tale of the Cat go 7 and change for 6F a few years back in the Kings Bishop.

Come and get me.

Silver Charm---

He certainly loved the Spa. Come and get me is right. Bravo will be sending early...makes you wonder how will PURGE win this race. He will not be pouncing on a stopping MEDALLIST in this one.

Perhaps this becomes a Blue Grass replay.

Good Luck,
Joe B.
