quick question on the 2W2W info

Hey everyone.

I wanted to ask a quick question on how to interpret the info on the top left of the sheets, specifically the 2W2W data points.

When I see a horse that went wide on each turn, does this information impact the speed figure? For example, in the race of the week, in Jerry\'s analysis, he notes for Cosmic Burst: \"... but a wide trip (4W4W) concealed the good effort.\" and the final figure on this last race was a new top of 6.2. I\'m assuming that despite her wide trip that she ran well and earned a 6. Conversely, in her prior race, she got a better trip going 1w1w and despite winning, she earned a lesser figure because her presumed better trip.

I guess what I\'m asking in short is, do horses that save more ground get their figures downgraded while horses that go wide get their figure upgraded? (assuming all other things equal, of course). Or is it up to the handicapper to make these distinctions.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and answer my question. I understand my questions are novice in nature and I appreciate the patience the experts on the forum have shown in the past.

edit: Just looked back. It was not a new top, it was a pair. But I don\'t think that necessarily changes the question.

Bluechip21,

The quick answer is a TG # includes ground loss as illustrated in running lines i.e. 2w2w, 4w4w, 1w etc.

This TG web site has an introductory section which is useful for understanding Thorospeak.

Re: the ROTW and hidden good effort, this is a little trickier. When a horse losses lots of ground e.g. 4w4w they typically finish lengths behind the winner. So one perspective is not really competitive. However eliminate the lost ground and the performance c/b comparable to the winner.

It is simple math. Again, generally each path equals 1 TG pt. e.g. Two horses who hit the finish line together with horse A 1w1w and horse B 2W2w (assuming equal weight carried) horse B earns a TG # 2 points smaller or better.

Actually, I think 1 path is equal to 1 length.  The point value of a length varies depending upon the distance of the race.  I don\'t know all the values.  At 10 furlongs, 1 length is worth half a point.  The value of a length increases as the distance of the race decreases.

When TG says a performance was buried, that means it would look worse if ground loss were not taken into account (as on the Beyer scale, for example).

The recommendation to read the intro section is a good one.

Thanks for the response. I\'ve read the intro pages many times over. Sometimes it helps me understand things a little easier when asking questions to experienced users.
