Clueless

It used to be somebody else\'s job to point out the moronic/stupid decisions by NYRA.

However, I can\'t resist.

Please tell me it isn\'t true that NYRA thinks it is a good idea to block out the wagering public from betting on the Stakes Pick-4 saturday unless they have a NYRA account.

Not sure about other states, but in NJ, TVG is a monopoly.  We can\'t open NYRA accounts.

What percentage of their likely largest betting pool on Saturday are they pissing away by restricting bettors.

Always a good idea to limit participation in a dying game.  Don\'t allow your customers to spend money on your product.

Brilliant.

Hey Jim:

Yesterday was like Groundhog Day (not the movie starring the gorgeous Andie
McDowell and that guy from Saturday Night Live): I woke up, looked at
Saturday\'s Aqueduct entries, and declared that winter was not over.

Maybe there is a runner at AQ Saturday that you are keen on, but at first
glance the Saturday card out in Lexington looks much more attractive than that
which is being offered at Ozone Park.

I don\'t want to pile on NYRA, but where is the $.50 P3, available in almost all
other venues? Where is some variation of the \"Rainbow\" style P6, available in a
denomination lower than $2? (especially now that Steve Crist, major proponent
of maintaining the $2 minimum, no longer seems to have as much influence). NYRA
Clueless Clowns may insist that changes can only be made with various levels of
agency/legislative approval, but I believe that Gulfstream Park almost
immediately approved the offering of the Bet 5(?) (top five finishers in a
given race) on EVERY race simply because a \"whale\" requested it. Then again,
I\'m pretty sure the Grand Slam is only offered at NYRA, and we have had some
extensive handicapping discussions on the TG board about that wager.

NYRA, which used to be the gold standard, now seems to be the follower rather
than the leader. Eighty percent of my wagers used to be on NYRA races; to be
honest, the NYRA \"season\" now begins when Belmont opens, runs through the Super
Saturdays at Belmont in Fall, and ends with a traditional visit or two on
Thanksgiving weekend.

But hey, the Clueless Clowns are quick to recognize one of their own, as is
proven by the fact that Greg Wolf will be rejoining the broadcast team on a
seasonal basis.

BRILLIANT!!

Niall

Not trying to defend but please note that this P4 are races 6-9, not the traditional late P4 or the All Stakes P4. The DRF entries at present include the wagering menu.

Niall:

Let me understand the facts. NYRA will be offering an additional P4
available only to NYRA Bets members? I guess not the worst innovation, but nowhere
near as brilliant (I\'m not being facetious) as Oaklawn\'s on-track show price
enhancement.

Also available on-track and at simulcast locations in NY:

I suppose the real attraction is the 15% winner\'s bonus for NYRA Bets wagers.

Niall,

Thanks for the clarification.  I didn\'t realize that.  That isn\'t as bad.  I thought they were taking away the all-stakes pick-4 option from bettors outside of NYRA.

Jimbo:

Noticed today that AQ is offering mandatory payout Pick 5 on races 8-12 Saturday.
Can not remember if NYRA has done this on previous BIG days. Will not be on
location Saturday so don\'t know if I am eligible to bet it.

They have done it at least within the past year when they have had 12 race cards.  I believe the mandatory payout is due to the fact that there won\'t be a comparable late PK-5 on the following day for a carry-over.  But, I probably shouldn\'t try to fathom the logic of NYRA.

Moose:

I would imagine that the absence of a late Pick 5 on a daily basis is NYRA\'s way of protecting its antiquated $2 minimum Pick 6. No reason it should not be offered on all days with 10 or more races.

Richie .... I\'m guessing NYRA is looking after the welfare of bettors and believes they need two races to recuperate from the rigors of the first Pick-5.  Now, I\'m no Mathcapper, but I saw that in today\'s AQ card, $252K was wagered on the Pick-5 and $37K on the Pick-6, so I can see why the Pick-6 is worth protecting.  Of course, a fair comparison would require a longitudinal study to see how much is bet into the Pick-6 pool, inclusive of massive carry-overs, but looking up one day exhausted my research capacity.
