I had not heard about trouble trading him because of debts, but supposedly he was always bugging Steinbrenner to get advances on his pay, so, that seems possible if not likely. I know he didn\'t let day games get in the way of his betting, as there are stories of Mickey getting race results delivered to him in the middle of games. Texas must have been quite a blow to the old horseplayer, after having spent his previous ML seasons in Cali and NY.

Mrs. Rivers used to get his check directly after awhile so they could pay their bills. In an accurate portrayal in The Bronx is Burning she stormed into George\'s office and demanded it. Mickey would sulk and supposedly Billy Martin was always slipping him money so he would play his A game when the ponies were going bad.

I remember a column in the Daily News after his trade to Texas wondering if his bookie set him up with an 800 number.

Just curious,

Anybody else think of a worse derby winner in the last 20 years than Super Saver?

I think \"horrific\" is a fair adjective for today\'s performance.

The last two KDs have given us two horses who may never win another race after.

Oh ye of short memory?

Already forgot about Giacoslo...er, Giacomo? I mean, he IS eminently forgettable...

Giacomo ran 3rd in the Belmont didn\'t he?

Mine that Bird ran very well in both the Preakness and Belmont.

I think Super Saver is the worst Derby winner in memory.

Super Saver is kind of like the guy who graduated last in medical school.  You still call him/her \"doctor\"...and history will note Super Saver won the KY Derby, the only race the masses ever will remember.  Sports are riddled with these types.
