Ask the Experts / Mark Casse and workouts
March 31, 2024, 06:29:09 PM
Casse won the final 2 races today at GP.
R10 Miss Speedy $19.20
R11 Creed\'s Gold $21.80

I liked Creed today but was turned off by only 1 published workout since last racing on 2/9. 42 days later she breezed 4F @PmM on 3/22 and raced and won today.

Miss Speedy last raced July 22,2023. She has 2 public workouts in 2024.
2/14 OTC 3F 35.4
3/15 OTC 5F 1:00.2

I like to see consistent work patterns without gaps so these MC horses are a real difficult read for me. Is anyone familiar with his training methodology and how do you handicap these scenarios with very limited work tabs?

Race is loaded with a full field, all the top trainers, top jocks, high dollar flesh.
I\'ll watch the tote but Catching Freedom TG pattern looks good to go forward.
Who you got?

Ask the Experts / Re: Pegasus Turf-Catnip
January 29, 2024, 08:55:37 AM
Catnip ran a huge one at 46/1 beaten 1/2 length from the 12 pp for the show.
Note to self: Stidham can get a horse ready for a G1 off a 6 month layoff shipping  in to South Fla from FG shortly before race.
Also something our host stated after BC weekend. European jockeys, Ryan Moore on Warm Heart, are just better on the turf than US based jocks.

Any of our Experts have an opinion on this TG At the Races G1?

I will make a case for #2 Jerry the Nipper 20/1 ML.
The NY bred gelding has raced exclusively in NY. TP brings Jerry to South Fla this winter and runs a better than it appears 3rd in the FL Stakes where he got bumped, steadied, lost ground and position. Then had to wait for an opening before finishing strong. Pletcher adds blinkers and should get a ground saving trip near the lead. Hoping TP did not have Jerry fully cranked for last as Pegasus appears to be the goal. Seems to like the GP turf and worked a bullet 47.49 coming off last. A 1W,1W TG one point top of 2, might be enough to be in a photo for the exacta. Gelding got to the races very late and his best running might be ahead of him. Also, was campaigned fairly hard with 7 races in 5+ months. Now freshened and 2nd off layoff.

Great betting race, who you like?

The other piece of the RNR Fountain of Youth was that he was bet down to 9/2 on a 27 million dollar handle day.

Ask the Experts / FOY Rail Question
March 23, 2022, 09:10:44 PM
Most jocks avoided the rail in this race. Simplification positioned off the rail and into traffic in the first turn and had to apply the brakes on. The few horses that ran on it, seemed to go nowhere including Rattle n Roll.
Could be an angle in the LA Derby if the rail was in question.
Anyone familiar with GP paths, care to comment?

Knicks Go seems to choose to finish out in the 4 path entering the stretch, Medina also out in the same path. They both seem to finish better in that path than HRC and ES on the inside. Not sure if Joel was asked about the path he finished in?
Could the outside have been better ground?

Asmussen said Combatant is similar to Lookin At Lee, who finished second in last year’s Derby from the No. 1 post.
“He does have an extremely similar personality of Lookin At Lee, and I thought Lookin At Lee did a great job to make the most of his 1 post last year,” Asmussen said. “What we’re trying to recreate is the run that Lee put in last year with a very similar horse. …
“I don’t think he’s necessarily had a good trip. Through the series at Oaklawn and the way the track was playing and how he was drawn, I think things could have been a lot different for him. I think the best is definitely ahead of him, whether it’s this Saturday in the Derby or a date following that.”

Combatant will need to run a new top as did LAL
He was fast at 2 and as SA noted, has had some excuses at OP
Has a nice win over the CD strip and familiar with the surroundings
Do not like the way he has changed leads in races and his CD work
Fairmont odds 43-1.
