I agree-get some new blood in.... I share a lot of Richiebee\'s feelings right now-I am so over NY racing. Besides the skimmed take outs, catastrophic breakdowns, crooked training,a lot of small operations are leaving their horses to starve when they can\'t make it. I could tell you about some scenes I am aware of, but I don\'t want to put those thoughts in your head. It usually takes a good 24 mo. before substantial changes actually occur, and we don\'t know what they are going to focus on after the completed consolidation, but man, how much worse can it get? I am ever hopeful....

There are a lot of changes coming down the pike with Cuomo\'s consolidations. We\'ll see what if anything happens with the NY racing industry over the next couple of years.

In an article on the newly agreed upon NYS BUDGET in Capital confidential at the Albany Times Union newspaper Posted on March 27, 2012 at 1:52 pm by Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau-a statement by the Governor\'s office

New York State Gaming Commission

Following the landmark agreement made earlier this month to begin the process of amending the state constitution to allow casino gaming in New York, the Budget enacts the Governor's proposal to create a New York State Gaming Commission, including the merger of the Division of Lottery and the Racing and Wagering Board. This reform reorganizes the state's gaming regulatory functions into a single oversight body. The new Commission would be comprised of seven members, five appointed by the Governor, and one apiece appointed by the Senate Majority Leader and the Assembly Speaker. The gaming industry constitutes a vital sector of New York's overall economy and contributes to economic development and job creation across the state. Under this agreement, the regulation of gaming will be conducted in the most efficient, transparent and effective manner possible, and eliminate unnecessary regulation redundancies. The new State Gaming Commission will help ensure that all gaming activity conducted in New York is of the highest integrity, credibility, and quality, and that the best interests of the public are served.

State: NYRA overcharged bettors by millions
Racing & Wagering Board to require paybacks, donation to charity
BY james m. odato, Capitol bureau
Updated 03:32 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2011

SCHENECTADY -— The state Racing & Wagering Board voted unanimously on Wednesday to admonish the New York Racing Association for overcharging bettors millions of dollars over the past 15 months.

The action happened at a board meeting after racing officials discovered NYRA overcharged by 1 percentage point the amount it kept from some \"exotic\" bets. Those bets include Pick 6 (on carryover days), Pick 3, Pick 4, trifecta and superfecta wagers, according to NYRA\'s website.

NYRA, which runs races for the state at the Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga thoroughbred tracks, will be required to pay back bettors about $8.6 million, according to one state official, if it can track them down through racing accounts. It will also have to help clear up IRS issues with those who won exotic bets during the period. Further, NYRA will be required to pay a $50,000 contribution to a racing-related charity.

The overcharges occurred not just on bets from NYRA tracks, but also on those handled by remote betting agencies involving NYRA races.

The racing association was supposed to reduce the maximum sum it kept from such bets to 25 percent starting on Sept. 15, 2010, but continued to charge a 26 percent takeout, according to two state officials. NYRA is cooperating with the state on the corrective measures, according to a spokesman for the racing board. NYRA will be expected to charge 24 percent a period of time that the racing board will determine.

\"The board is looking out for the best interests of the betting public,\" said Lee Park, a press officer for the racing board.

Ask the Experts / Secretariat
October 08, 2010, 06:51:04 PM
Watched the premier-it was predictable, of course- more about the owner than the actual horse. There were some cream cheese moments-but there was a charming cameo by the owner of Secretariat near the end. The theater burst into applause, something rarely seen these days! They did a good job of depicting what a remarkable feat his Belmont win was. It was cute-it is a Disney movie after all, but I\'d watch it again.

Thanks, It sounds like pretty taxing work, but she loves the animals. I did read that it\'s best to have a good working knowledge of horse anatomy and physiology before entering a course.

I\'m wondering if any owners out there can tell me a little about this subject. My daughter loves horses and has been interested in massage. There are certificate courses for it, but is there much demand for such a service and can it pay a decent wage for someone? I really have no idea, except that it is accepted practice with human athletes.

I think it\'s great that she can have some babies and start rolling around in the grass. She is such a magnificent animal and deserves this well earned rest! The Woodward will go down in history for sure, as one of the greatest races of all time.

When I read that she had to lay down in her stall after the Woodward I knew she would never be the same-but she is one of the greatest fillies of all time-No one can take away what she did in that race and I for one would like to see a match race-doesn\'t matter the outcome...she deserves her title as horse of the year!
