Ask the Experts / Wesley Ward in France This Morning
August 24, 2025, 05:35:01 AM
14:50 Deauville (France) 24 Aug 2025
Sumbe Prix Morny Stakes

Group 1 | 2YO only

Winner â,¬220,500 - 6 run

I have no clue how or even if you should bet this race, but this is one of the strongest two-year old races I\'ve ever seen in Deauville today. I\'d be willing to take on the Aidan O\'Brien runner Gstaad (I always think of the pawn shop scene in Trading Places when I hear that city--in Philadelphia it\'s worth 50 bucks) with Wesley Ward\'s monster--not sure how the straight course changes anything--and at least three potential superstars are in this race. Outfielder was a tick off the track record in his debut at Churchill--not sure how much that means on their grass course, but he was incredibly visually impressive. Even the filly Venetian Sun is no slouch. Throw in a Charlie Appleby star, Wise Approach, for fun. If Gstaad trounces these, I\'ll be really impressed. Enjoy!

Maybe someone can fix the link? I don\'t think it\'s working. They\'re shutting down the end of this year ending major racing in Northern California.

I share many of the same sentiments, having done this daily grind for a long time with diminishing returns and increasing frustrations.

There\'s a track available from DRF/Xpressbet and NYRA bets called Caymanas Park, outside Kingston, Jamaica.

They have a safe, deep, super-consistent, bias-free surface, great jockeys and trainers and HUGE fields and payouts, especially pick sixes and multi-race horizontal bets.

All their info is free with the most detailed past performances I\'ve ever seen, including the groom\'s name!

They have a strict no tolerance policy for PEDs and other drugs, though Lasix and Bute are allowed. They test like MLB tests for COVID!

They run that place with as much integrity and honesty as I\'ve ever seen at a racetrack. I\'ve personally spoken with some of the administrators, and they\'re all really good folks.

Give them a look.

Downsides are no turf, and they usually race only 1X per week, sometimes 2X a week.

Good luck.

You get a sinking feeling after that performance.  One caveat though--there seems to be an ungodly rail bias there. You\'d think Medina will be on the rail. I don\'t blame you though.  Pimlico is a screwy track to begin with. Baffert has a horse in Race 1 tomorrow, Hozier. The rest have been removed from his barn.

I keep trying to figure out why anyone cares what people outside of the business think.

I know who she is.  She says flat out she was an expert witness in Arkansas for Baffert\'s cases there. Either her point is valid or it isn\'t though. You can literally test positive for drugs from drinking tap water. Years ago at Belmont, I remember Aidan Obrien bringing his own water from Ireland.  He wouldn\'t let his horses drink tap water. That\'s attention to detail right there.

From someone who actually knows what she\'s talking about.

Maybe Baffert is guilty of other things, but this is a complete joke. Beyond a joke. How the hell can KY, supposedly the thoroughbred mecca of the world, be this screwed up?

Ever see his early life and story--once you come from those roots, you never lose that fight, even if he mingles with the super wealthy today. And they all do it by the way. Maybe not Shug lol. This particular horse I\'m hearing from some big trainers I\'ve spoken with has some serious physical issues, and there probably is more to the inflammation story than we are being told. He will def. be disqualified from the derby as well provided the split sample tests over the limit. This will take months though as there will be appeals and what not.

Maybe we should just give racing back to the aristocrats for whom it is just a sport like it is in England. The trouble with the rest of us is we actually need the money, hence all the complications, deceptions, cheating, etc.. Yes, bravo to the Phipps stable. Might as well take gambling off the table, too, make these meets like the Far Hills jumping races where racing is a pleasant afternoon out with the family or business partners, black labs and standard poodles by our sides. Tailgate and try new recipes and sample wines. Sign me up for that. It\'s the dirty money that soiled this affair. The Phipps\' interests are certainly above all that. Hey they only pay 15%-20% tax on capital gains for all that old money wealth, so why would they ever gamble in the first place??? We suckers pay 25-30% for bustin our stones at hard work.

Well, then. . .don\'t send your horses to his barn then lol
My thoughts are the Baffert express will keep on rolling along. And he\'s got several live runners on Preakness day you might want to factor into your wagers. I know I will.

I was thinking along similar lines. If what he said in that press conference is accurate (if he\'s lying there, it\'s like a whole Michael-Corleone-Senate-hearing thing--and he\'d be REALLY stupid, which we know he is not), it should be easy enough with time to get to the truth, esp. regarding the hair analysis. The whole thing seems like some kind of set up, or dare I use the \"C\" word. None of this makes any sense. I\'m not defending him, but until the second split sample gets tested, this isn\'t official anyway. And labs do make mistakes by the way--any important tests for horses or humans should be repeated and double-checked. I\'m not saying this is true, but there are enough elements who\'d like to do away with racing and will take any chance they can get to take a free shot at the stumbling giant, like the Lilliputians harassing poor Gulliver. I can\'t remember the story, did Gulliver have it coming? I don\'t think so. Anyway, on to the Preakness, for now anyway. Poor Bob won\'t be able to show his face in Baltimore. Jimmy Barnes is all he needs anyway. I\'m thinking a 1-2 finish will quell the critics.

I want to say Richmond Avenue? I remember a great pizza place nearby called Gino\'s. I would go with my dad and some of his friends, all WW II Vets--a hardboiled crew to say the least. They mostly went to Monmouth and Jersey tracks, but from that ridiculously young age, I always liked New York racing better. Back then, you could smoke, and the smoke inside was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. People packed in there like maniacs. The bathrooms never worked and smelled god awful. You got these cool little tickets with letters, not numbers! Some tracks, like Monticello and Finger Lakes, just gave you the audio call with no video. Noting better than sitting down at Gino\'s with a nice slice and a racing form--real papers back then, not these little books, handicapping jocks like Jerry Bailey and Angel Cordero. Too many memories! Monmouth Park was always so beautiful and we\'d take my mom and go out to a nice dinner at the beach afterwards, but OTB had the better racing, so you had to endure that place to bet on it, unless you wanted to take the drive east to Aqueduct or Belmont, which I did a lot in my college years. How they don\'t have every Breeder\'s Cup at Belmont is beyond me. Anyway, good luck everyone and good night.
