JT Lundy, who looted Calumet Farm and lived large while doing so, displayed a wry
sense of humor in naming some of the Calumet Breds. If you have read the
wonderful book Wild Ride, you will recall that one runner was named \"Somfas\"
(hint: the first letter stands for \"sit\" and the last letter stands for \"spin\".)

Also named by Lundy was \"So Tell Me Laddie\" the first few words of the punch
line of a particularly blue joke which was one of Lundy\'s favorites.

A couple of years ago there was the racecallers\' nightmare \"Heyhoofhearted\".

Fifteen or so years ago there was a mare running at NYRA named \"Babies A Comin\".
The dam: \"After the Lovin\".

Leave Tiger alone. As a local sportswriter said: The man changed the game of golf
one cocktail waitress at a time.

One of my all time favorites and goes well with the New Orleans Saints these days was Whodathorsey. He ran in Ny in the late seventies.

Ugliest name ever - on purpose.
There was horse that ran at Aqueduct years ago who was strictly a betting tool. They darkened his form by running him at wrong distances, wrong surfaces, wrong tactics, etc until the day when they cracked down and lost by a nose.

Just to make sure that those that bet on the horsey with the cute name wouldn\'t bet on him they gave him the glorious name of Bucket Mouth.

uh, in 1945 it was probably not what it is today.

One of the classic moments in race calling was provided by Marshall Cassidy at Belmont, when, in his stentorian tone, he called one of her victories with a pronounced emphasis on \"tatas,\" followed by a dramatic pause, and then punctuated it with an emphatic, \"in front.\"

Oh, I\'m not so sure, Boscar. The phrase (and its variants) is of uncertain origin, but it is reasonably presumed to be American, and perhaps originating among jazz musicians, as in, to blow on an instrument. So, 1945 is about right for this phrase to have been arising from the colloquial to wider usage; being on the lips, as it were, of a horseman, if not the members of the Jockey Club.

The beauty part is, it works both ways. I mean, by Menow out of Explosion???

Great stuff. Thanks, Hooper! And, I kept that as clean as possible, JB.

Silver Charm

The fact that Pegram needed to ask probably tells us a little something about him.

Unbelievable! Imagine that race call.....\"coming to the top of the stretch, it\'s.....

PS:  I also like Hoosierdaddy

devilinahorsesuit

per OED it dates to at least 1933 and was common enough by 1941 to be included in dictionaries of slang...

Well, could have been a little old lady passing on the name in those days. One or two drinks and APPROVED!~

Damn, I love those old charts.

Attendance over 41,000 and 2.6 million in 1948 \'real\' dollars. Must be 100 million in 2009 scrip.

Keep in mind that the betting consisted of Win Place and Show ONLY!

Impressive!
