Connections have decided as was pretty much expected that taking the Polytrack route back to a big one, as has served them twice in the past, dictates The Kentucky Cup. This was almost inevitable.

And he lost both times.............thirds a charm!

At this point, it\'s hard for me to decide, and it\'s almost impossible to imagine getting paid for deciding, what Mr Carl would have in his mind right now, or what SS thinks. A horseman would have a better idea. If there is one fine line, it\'s right now. It doesn\'t seem to me that Hard Spun is a very good candidate for 10f, so if I were a trainer, I would be looking to bank this one, while respecting the owner\'s wishes - as sincerely as my own.

HS has the speed and looked to me like he loved the surface, (which very much like Bear Now at WO, confused me - I bet First Defence at SAR, another example of me not being able to see through the wax, or thinking I know best) romping as he did in the Spring down there, but that has tripped me up repeatedly this past year, fortunately not very often in gross count, but enough to make me seek a new view. It seems logical to race harder than he did in the Bluegrass; one left. I don\'t believe that stuff in the paper about wanting to beat his cowboy friend, that\'s not even a good joke. If you \"loved\" winning the Travers, because it was more prestigious than any other mid summer race, I am supposed to think you want the KY Cup when prepping for the Classic?

This is one of the first trainers I ever saw prep in a million dollar race, with Unbridled, in the Super Derby. I see old fashioned lack of motive here. There must be something else to think about this week end.

I\'m thinking about Discreet Cat- it was so disapointing last year, his loss in the Dubai World Cup and even a newbie like me realized that something was terribly wrong with him that day. He\'s been six whole months off, and now will be in the Vosburgh this weekend. I would love to see him romp in this one. Any thoughts?

He looked tired before and after the Travers: we were saying he was spent.

Um, not sure how he\'s going to fare in his next race, guess it will be more than telling for the BC.  Powerful animal he is, when he\'s up to it.

Awesome one turn horse; I kept my tape of him for the fan in me,
but it pays to anticipate seeing these, and then taking a minute
out to think about who could pay for being a fan. This one and Street
Sense who I think Sandie is talking about this AM, aren\'t the kind
that pay for the time you spend watching this kind. Maybe that\'s not
important? This one\'s debut at the SPA was really something, but that\'s
become a sure way to have to leave home in this era.
This guy\'s very tractable, which caps a wonderful package. Hard to see why they ever raced him long other than he looked so good in the Gulf on CUP day when he was 3. Hope he holds together, he can look like a cat when he is right.

Anyone think the final work was odd?  Shouldn\'t Nafzger have put a sharpener into the colt considering the field/pace scenario (iow, Hard Spun)?

Lost Cause

I really don\'t think Nafzger is looking to win this race...He will be a total play against for me..

Judging by your screen name one would suspect you are a fan of this colt.  His work was very different than he normally works.  Carl leaves little to chance and has always worked his horses from the poles to the wire with varying gallop outs.

Street Sense always starts slow and finishes very well.  My notes indicate that in ALL of SS\'s Churchillworks he finishes his last eighth in 11 and 3/5\'s or less.  In Tuesdays work,  his last eighth was in twelve and three fifths!  Several different clockers all have the same splits and a photo taken during the work (now up at brisnet on the handicappers edge) clearly shows Calvin with a very loose rein and a ton of horse.

As for Saturday, Jones has stated he wants to get to the rail and he drew it!  However the rail is death at Turfway with the last week or so seeing all winners being at least four wide for the entire journey with more than a few going gate to wire.  This race has all the earmarks of being a strange one and it would be difficult to expect that SS is anywhere near fully cranked up.
