From Del Mar--

Del Mar Challenge Players,

Santa Anita recently offered a $1 million bonus for the dual winner of one of their tournaments and the Breeders Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) held at Santa Anita on November 4 & 5, 2016. In addition, if the player wins both of the mentioned contests plus the 2017 National Handicapping Championship (NHC), another $1 million is won.

After competing in the Santa Anita contest, a group of regular contest players contacted Del Mar to see if we were willing to do the same bonus or something similar for the Del Mar Handicapping Challenge (DMHC) on July 23 & 24. After discussing the bonus with the players already registered for DMHC, some players were not supportive of changing the prize structure around to accommodate the bonus this close to the Challenge dates, especially given prizes have been advertised for several months.  Unfortunately, DMTC has already allocated its budget for this event which includes funding all eight of the NHC entries awarded.

However, these players came up with the idea of offering the bonus as an opt-in for $100 per player. Basically, for the contestants that do not want to participate, no action is required. Contestants that do want to participate in the bonus may sign-up and pay the $100 fee at the following link:

Your debit or credit card will only be charged if the minimum number of players needed to provide the bonus is met. If the $1 million bonus is funded, Del Mar and these players have worked out an arrangement with the same insurance broker Santa Anita used to insure their $1 million bonus payment.

The above link contains a frequently asked questions section with all the details. One of the players involved, Kevin McFarland, is willing to answer any further questions you may have regarding the opt-in or website at kevinmcfarlandsd@yahoo.com .

Just wondering what everyone\'s or anyone\'s take is on this? The letter previous to this one was a survey asking if changes to the format such as allowing rolling doubles and losing a NHC spot to allow the 1 Million dollar bonus was something of interest to the entrants. I voted yes to the rolling doubles but wasn\'t sure on the bonus in lieu of losing spots to the January Crap shoot! However in the spirit of my lumber yard with a matchstick philosophy I will pony up the $100!
