Anyone wanna take a guess at that putrid performance?

Looks like a dream trip and then comes up completely empty, after every clocker in the free world said he looked *awesome* all week.

Re-evaluate the Wood? Blame Pletcher?

A little of both I think.

1. After Gemologist I vowed never to ride the \"White Mercedes\" again in the Derby. I tossed Verranzano and Materiality and thought I had kicked my TAP KD habit. However, Outwork didn\'t prep in Florida, was fast enough, pattern looked good, horse had some grit and I bit 100%. To me looked like the most likely horse to hit the board based on sheet and forward placed running style. Obvious now that TAP magic does not work at Churchill. His only Derby winner a slow rat who tripped in the slop w Bo-Rail and never ran a step after.

2. Re Wood, no one will ever convince me that Outwork would defeat Gunrunner at any distance above 1 1/16 despite what their sheets look like. Wood too fast, La Derby too slow, I am not sure, but in my opinion if they were put on the same track in the same race, on form, Outwork would never finish in front of Gunrunner. Gunrunner was a can\'t use based on his sheet, but ran his eyeballs out.

I think rest of the race was formful/explainable based on TG numbers. Exaggerator, Sudden Breaking News and Outwork were my keys, two of them ran to their sheets. I can accept the Nyquist and Gunrunner move forwards and Mohaymen rebounding off his X, but the Outwork sheet must have been TAP voodoo.

I know of at least one clocker that wasn\'t as thrilled with Outwork this week as others were. But opinions are like assholes.

The Wood figure\'s too fast.

In retrospect I\'d have to say he\'s a turf horse. He has very high knee action especially on the left fore.

Secondly, the Wood surface looks to have been misjudged by a lot of people.

As for a good worker, yes he is, but he is not overly fluid. He was laying about fourth early.

Quite simply one of the most disappointed I\'ve been in a long time.  I don\'t know if I\'m more bitter at myself, because I loaded up on a TAP again, seemingly refusing to learn my lesson, or just in Outwork being stone empty?  I really thought he was \"different.\"

Seemed like he couldn\'t have been in a better spot? and then... nothing.  I will say Nyquist pressed a 45 and change half and went on with it like nothing.  This horse is much much better than his sheet would indicate.  That said I don\'t see how he has anything left in two weeks.  He looked like an exhausted horse afterwords to me.

I will never in million years understand the love for a horse like this. I was wrong a LOT today....but not on this one. Man o man just terrible in every way. Terrible Derby trainer, TERRIBLE Wood, terrible draw, terrible pedigree and terrible run.

He was in it early, pace wise about where he figured to be. One concern had him lengths clear of Danzing Candy after 4 panels.

Still believe he has Turf Horse action. Expect to see him in the Belmont Stakes if he is sound. Same old song and dance.
