A great time of year for racing the next couple of months, with Fall Keeneland,
Fall Belmont and of course BC Day(s) at CD. Lots of big names in big stakes races
with lots on the line.

For every superstar equine in thoroughbred racing, there are what? hundreds of
less talented runners toiling away in total anonymity at the smaller tracks, and
of course there are varying degrees of anonymity:

From the \"Legal Notices\" section of the SaturdayNew York Post:

\"Dark bay thoroughbred type gelding with no lip tatoo or other means of
identification that was trucked on March 15, 2010 from  Belmont Park to Cornell
UNiversity Equine Research Park in Ithaca New York with no papers or instructions
of any kind will be deemed ABANDONED by a court of law if the owner does not come
forward to claim the animal immediately. The horse is early to mid teens, thin
condition, ataxic in hind limbs. Repeated efforts to establish ownership through
the trucker have failed. This notice by publication is to provide the opportunity
to claim the horse and avoid an order of abandonment and subsequent
disposition...This horse will be deemed abandoned and offered for adoption  or
euthanasia, if not claimed immediately with proper documentation of ownership...\"

No lip tattoo.  It never raced.  Mid-teens.  A pony?  How\'d it get onto the track grounds?   Sounds like someone with no money (the ataxia) was desperate to get it medical help.  It will get humane euthanasia, most likely.
