Guy sitting in the Paddock Bar with me hit the pick 6 at Hollywood yesterday.  He bet about $1800 to hit it.  Paid over half a million.  I thought I was having fun by buying nice bubbly for everyone after the derby.  This guy kept the bar open all night.  True story.

Just thought I would share some positive sentiment on the board.

Great win for that guy...two of those earlier races were extremely close photos and he got both of them.

How did he have the $89 horse?  What got him on it?

I dunno.  He was having so much fun I didn\'t want to bother him.  He\'s a regular though, I will ask.

It\'s nice to hear these stories. I\'m a little curious too about his (or anyones)thought processes regarding long shots.

I\'ll tell a quick little story -- My biggest score ever was the result of a mistake.

I handicapped the pick 6 out at Santa Anita.  Decided it was too hard to really try for, but decided on a lark to put together an inexpensive stab ticket.

Long story short -- I thought I had lost but had hit the consolation.  When I signed on line to check my account, I could not figure what was wrong as the balance seemed off.  Turns out I actually hit the Pick 6.  5 of the races were the horses I had intended.  However, in one of the races (the one with the $90 winner in it), I had accidentally put in the PP numbers instead of the program numbers.  As a result of a scratch, my picks were all off one.

I am terribly embarrassed by it, but it is what it is.  I have lost the right to ever complain about a bad beat (I had had some horrendous bad beats in Pick 6s out in California -- but now I feel i have no moral right to complain about them).

I few years back, I was 5 for 5 going into the final leg.  I had singled a 15-1 shot in the final leg.  By post time my 15-1 shot was washed-out and about 50-1.  As the horses were entering the gates, they scratched him.  The Fav ended up winning and ended up hitting hit. Sometimes you have to be lucky in this game, and thats at every level.

Too funny.  I just had almost the near opposite happen to me.  Short story is this.  Today is my birthday and every year it falls on or near Memorial Weekend.  I have a few people that always come out and we get our grins and giggles playing the local strip at Canterbury.  This year Sat. was the day, and the pick 6 figured to be worth around 25k.  So I decided to dope it out.  The first and third races of the sequence were for two year olds at 3 1/2 furlongs, all debut runners, the second race of the sequence was a bunch of maiden walking feed bills so anyone could win, and you could make an argument for 6 of them in the last.  I figured it would take 4 tickets and $480 to have a reasonable chance to hit.  But rather than put the $480 in, I decided to go cheap and play a \"what the hell we\'re here\" ticket.  I singled a long shot in the second race of the sequence knowing we would have almost no chance to win but if we did we would probably take the whole pool.  Because I was playing that way, I then decided to go ultra-cheap and singled one horse in the first race as well because I figured why spend the money when we don\'t have much of a chance in the next race anyway.  The ticket looked like this:

1
7
4,5,6
5
1,5
1,2,3,5,8,9
$72

Well, we missed the first race when our single ran second so that was that.  Then in the second race of the sequence, our long shot wound up flipping in the gate and we got transferred to #4 horse, who wound up winning and was favored by $62.  We then proceeded to walk through the rest of the raced and wound up with 5/6.  Had I known I was going to wind up on the favorite in the second race I would have easily went 3 deep in the first and we would have had an easy $6200 score.

This brings up a good point.  I really disagree with the way they transfer you to the favorite when someone scratches in the middle of the pick 6.  If I were playing a more serious ticket I would probably already have the favorite, or if I didn\'t there would probably be another I would like more.  Who needs to hit the thing twice?  They should give the option to pick another horse or take a refund on the scratch only.

They used to have that on So Cal circuit.  You could pick an alternate in case one of your horses scratched.  The last time I tried, a few years back, they said they didn\'t do it anymore.  I\'m not sure why they stopped.  I thought it was a good idea.
