I ordinarily do not make appeals like this, but I would like to let you know about an opportunity for philanthropy here in my backyard. I have a friend, Nanci Beryl, who is a master\'s level clinician and horse lover who started a therapeutic equine program at her home in Pattersonville. She started a few years ago with just a few horses and works with children with mental health problems and women\'s issues. She has done amazing work with some of my clients who are the most disabled and vulnerable/at risk youth in the county.
Her big heart compels her to rescue horses also, I\'ve seen her do miracles with abused and neglected horses.  Recently, a horrific abuse case involving twelve horses in our area came to light, and Peaceful acres, her non for profit organization is going to take in two more animals. This is the e-mail I received this morning from Nanci-

Hello Friends of Peaceful Acres,

Re: Update on the status of 12 rescued horses from Palentine Bridge area –  As seen on Channel 13 and Channel 9

I received an email and spoke to the Montgomery County SPCA the other day regarding a surrender of 12 horses – a neglect case (extreme abuse in my eyes). The woman owned 13 horses including pregnant mares, stallions and foals. One foal was dead, in the stall with her mother, lets call her Hope, she was so weak she could not stand – she was dying.... ., Another – I will call her Angel was in total darkness for months – no natural light, not even a light bulb. She had not gone out  to see the light of day in months, imprisoned in a stall, in a barn with rats, manure up to one and a half feet high. Little Hay – NO Grain and deplorable conditions!

Peaceful Acres involvement was to help as a sanctuary in anyway we can, including locating resources for the SPCA of Montgomery County and the organization – two women who have been placing and now will offer foster care for the majority of the horses. These horses are still awaiting adoption; one is in his/her 20s.

Our roll at PA – I spoke to the SPCA again yesterday and was compelled to get involved in a physical and personal way. The horse that was left in total darkness needed what I can provide. I did well with our PMUs – Pokka and Whinny at bringing them through loss and fear, I was compelled to try. The long and the short. This is a little mare – afraid, disassociated, and depressed, terrified of people and touch - matted, dirty, feet that are in the worst condition than I have ever seen. Angel, as I began to call her allowed me to touch her – pat her – touch her head, ears, belly and legs. It was awesome. Trust was beginning to take place.

The other mare still on the property, I will call her Hope - was weak, unable to stand until last night – Great Job Cathy, Cindy, Dianne and the SPCA,  this mare also may come to Peaceful Acres. She is depressed, weak in poor body condition and had just lost her foal – her foal died of starvation and hypothermia while in the stall with her mother in December. This mom – had to stay with her dead foal! This is so incredibly sad!

(Angel – Will also be our mascot for "The Angels of Help" – she and this situation is a symbol of what we do – helping others!)

Please Help Us to Help Them!

I hope to bring Angel and Hope to Peaceful Acres on Sunday or Monday. We will be doing a documentary on their life – from their purchase by the neglectful owner – most likely at an auction, to the rescue by The SPCA, to their new placement at Peaceful Acres – they will be our Mascots for the sanctuary – true little ones that are the reason behind why I do what I do and why I believe so powerfully in the connection between horses and people. I saw it and  felt it last night in a place that would have made me afraid and sick, had I been alone – but I was with the horses and I was strong.
Here is my request:

We need money to care for Angel and "Hope"  -

SPONSOR a Horse For:

Farrier work every 5-6 weeks – maybe more due to the condition  of their feet: $ 30.00 per horse per 6 weeks.
Gain – Nutrena's Safe Choice - $12.00 per bag/  Need 2+ bags per month per horse. : $50.00 grain sponsor
Hay: $70.00 per month
Shavings: $50.00 per month per horse – This is necessary – Angel and Hope do not know what it is like to be in a clean stall!  They need to smell fresh pine and be able to lie down on a bed of clean shavings!
Vet care: not a monthly item – any donations are appreciated. Range in visit cost: $150.00-$300.00 – once they are seen by Teddy Smith – we expect they will be clear of having vet care again for a couple months, a check up.

(Please remember – there are 6 others still needing care and money – they just happen to be fostered at a loving home – not at Peaceful Acres!
Please sponsor Angel or Hope!

If you are interested in volunteering to help – we will train you to work with Angel – Hope will allow you to handle her now and needs physical touch and care.
Please email me if you want to help or sponsor Angel or Hope.
Peace to you all – thank you for your support and love of the animals!

Horse Powered Human Solutions

This is a legitimate  non for profit and a worthy cause. She is willing to do all the hard work, but needs financial assistance to ensure these horses are brought back to health! I know some of you have the means and inclination to provide support for such a worthy cause, so I invite you to  check out the website for peaceful Acres and see for yourself the good work being done there. Anything you can do would be appreciated. Something is better than nothing!! Here is your chance not to talk but to take action! Sincerely, Valerie
