Folks, always enjoy this forum during Triple Crown season.

What do you make of Zanjero coming up to the Derby?  He is my only Futures play and I\'ll be keying him on Saturday.  Sometimes you gotta take a stand in this game.

A horse with only a maiden and allowance win as a 2YO is not gonna get a lot of play, and didn\'t in the futures (how you could get still get 37-1 in pool #3 after losing by a head in a G1 is beyond me).

I figure he\'ll be a semi-popular value choice to round out supers and tris, but how about the whole enchilada?  Your thoughts...

Two years ago an impossible(going in) Giacomo won against the fastest overall 3yr old crop ever, fig wise. No stars this year, any one of them can win.

If this Enchillada was made by a YUM! Brand store in New York where they found rats running loose or Philly where they found E Coli in the lettuce.

The thought of betting on Zanjero makes my stomach turn......

Hoss!

I remember your friend was all over Giacomo a couple years back. But I think he liked Private Vow last year, can\'t recall for sure.

Which horse is he on this year?

CtC,

Good memory!  My friend is predictably preparing to unload on Tiago. I can\'t see it myself, but will admit the horse scares me a little every time I glance at his brief racing career to date.  I\'m thinking that bottom of the super is a good place for Tiago.

Back to Zanjero, how do you assess?  Key, use, or toss?

slewzapper

He reminds me of Steppenwolfer.

Flighted Iron

May want to inform your friend that Tiago translated means RUBBER.

Hoss,

Shhhhh regarding my memory. I don\'t want to ruin my reputation here...lol Truthfully, anyone that called Giacomo is a matter than would stick with me. I did not figure that horse in a million years. He won one other race but he won when it counted. The stars aligned for him that day.

I don\'t want to offer a suggestion on Zangero. I will mention some facts and you can chose to do as you wish.

He did finish right there in the Blugrass and he was on the deeper part of the track. Being inside was a bad place. (Review the replay to be sure I\'m right about his inside trip.)

He was getting to Circular Quay (marginally) in the Louisiana Derby and in doing so he came from further back.

some think he\'s sitting on a bad pattern. I don\'t believe that. I think he\'ll give his best race Saturday.

He is by Cherokee Run out of an A.p. Inday broodmare. I like his back side pedigree a little better than his Sire side, but I have a soft spot for Cherokee Run having cashed him first out at 8-1 and having counseled my best friend upon a straight trifecta and to back him in the Breeders Cup Sprint he won also. That friend is gone now, but he taught me how to handicap.

Sounds like your friend is tied to Shireffs some. He\'s a good trainer and thats understandable. Maybe its because he\'s a half to Giacomo.

Good Luck

marcus

i got him in pool #2 but as the races shapes up ,he\'s looks to me  like , depending where they draw , one of several \"maybe\" use  horses at huge prices underneath at the bottom of supers  ...

CTC,

I have a neutral opinion on the Keeneland rail issue you mention.  Actually the head-on view replay of the Blue Grass shows that Zanjero was relatively well off the rail. Interestingly in the next race that day a group of ladies went 1 1/8 and the winner skimmed home hugging the rail. In any case, if Zanjero\'s path was bad, so much the better his effort.

My main focus is what Zanjero got out the Blue Grass in terms of conditioning and willingness to show more gate speed.  Asmussen\'s stated intentions are to have the horse placed more forwardly in the Derby.  In that context, the Blue Grass looks to be an excellent prep.  Note that Bridgmohan was able to negotiate a stalking trip over the CD strip in a smart allowance win last fall. Not to say I expect a stalking trip on Saturday, but if Bridgmohan calls for run from mid-pack instead of the clouds, and Zanjero responds, maybe he gets a jump on the bevy of more highly regarded closers.

What does zanjero translate as?  Is it something relevant to cinco de mayo?

MO

from NTRA website...

Zanjero is Spanish for "water master," and today still is used as name of the occupation of controlling water supplies.

SoCalMan2

I get it...the Derby is the Zanjero....mile and a quarter without a break for water
