Who's Your Derby Daddy?/ Very Slow Afternoon at Work

Previously, I opined that top sire Tapit might be considered a bit of a
disappointment as a Derby stud; going back to 2012 he has had seven of his sons
run in the Derby, never hitting the trifecta, but three times completing the
super.

Further research reveals that during the last five Derbies, no stallion has had
more  starters than Tapit (7). Other stallions with multiple Derby starters in the
last 5 years: Giant\'s Causeway, Curlin and Malibu Moon (4); Uncle Mo and Into
Mischief (3); Candy Ride, More Than Ready, Tiznow, Bernardini, Pioneer of the
Nile, Lucky Pulpit, Harlan\'s Holiday, Indian Charlie, War Pass, Dixie Union and
Scat Daddy (2).

All told, the 95 runners in the last five Derbies have been sired by 64 different
stallions.

Observations:

(1) The Pulpit (A.P Indy - Preach, by Mr Prospector) sire line has arguably been
the strongest Derby influence over the last 5 years. There are the seven Tapits
(Tapit sired by Pulpit), the two Lucky Pulpits (including Cal Chrome) and one
runner in 2012 sired by Pulpit himself.

(2) Malibu Moon (sire of 2013 winner Orb) (sire of Gormley) has two top 5 Derby
finishes as a stallion. (Note that Malibu Moon is bred like Pulpit, by A.P. Indy
out of a Mr. Prospector mare). Tapit has three fourth place finishers. No other
stallion has multiple top 5 placements.

(3) Into Mischief (sire of Practical Joke) has had little success with his three
Derby runners, finishing 19th in 2014 (Vicars in Trouble), and 17th and 18th in
2013 (Goldencents and Vyjack, both of whom became millionaires as milers).

Science? Hardly a large sample. False News? Don\'t get me started. Like I said, a
VERY slow afternoon at work, but just maybe some pedigree talk will draw Chuckles
out for his yearly visit.

I was thinking the other day when TGJB said the real stars of the show would appear soon on the board if Chuckles had already slipped one by you richiebee.....

As most on here probably know, Into Mischief is largely thought of as a sprinty win early type pedigree.  But interestingly, the bottom side of his pedigree is exactly the same as his half sister Beholder.  On the sire side, she was out of Henny Hughes, a sprinter, who was out of Hennessy, a Storm Cat son.  Meanwhile, Into Mischief traces to Storm Cat through Harlan\'s Holiday and Harlan.  Hardly science at all it seems when comparing these two.....Beholder a winner at 1 1/4 miles against boys while Mischief won at 1 1/16 miles and competed in several 7f races.

Into Mischief was also the sire of now sidelined One Liner.  Part of the Pletcher brigade that is falling apart as quickly as it banded it together.

\"Real stars of the show\"? I think JB\'s comment was actually that the \"nuts\"
would start to come out.

I have no problem supplementing your excellent Jesuit education by introducing
you to dive bars and harness racing. However, you MUST get the lingo straight.
When referring to the progeny of a stallion, use the word \"By\"; as in \"Affirmed,
BY Exclusive Native\". The \"out of\" language is used when referring to the dam, as
in Affirmed, BY Exclusive Native OUT OF Won\'t Tell You. There will be a quiz on
this at a future date. So, Into Mischief is BY Harlan\'s Holiday OUT OF Leslie\'s
Lady, BY Tricky Creek.

JB,

Should have included you in last nights group text NEWSFLASH:

Professor Bee concluded that IWC will be a significant underlay in Louisville due to the fact that anyone who ever puked on St Paddy\'s Day will be running to the windows.

I agree with avoiding the Tapits. Yes, Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes in front of a big crowd but the Tapit colts, not the Tapit fillies, seem to be pretty high strung and come undone at Churchill Downs. On the subject, I thought Battlion Runner was really hot going to the gate of the Wood Memorial on a day that was not hot. Probably wasn\'t going to beat the winner but gave it up way too soon.

Another slow day.
