Worked like a BEAST today. Hit the corner sharp. Strong gallop out. Might wire this bunch!!

Fairmount1

Not happening.

TAP hasn\'t won at Churchill since 2011.  More Than Ready says not enough distance breeding.  Slower figs as the distances increase.  Wood close finish to NI plus gallop outs says not 1 1/4 miles even with a favorable pace scenario.

Verrazano\'s not winning.  He worked like a fast horse up to 1 1/16 miles would work.

Not sure why people insist on focusing on one race to evaluate a horse, especially one where the horse was clearly not fully extended.  You are comparing gallop-outs of a horse that was fully extended to one that was not.  Pretty meaningless.

Not sure why people insist on focusing on only one side of a pedigree when evaluating distance ability.  If we are having a pedigree discussion, Normandy Invasion\'s is laughably worse, especially on the female side.  Verrazano has one of the best distance pedigrees on the female side of anyone in this race, and if you don\'t think female stamina influences are important, you haven\'t been paying attention to pedigrees in recent years.

The figs are slower at longer distances because once they knew what they had, there was no reason to do anything more than qualify for the derby without stressing the horse.  The TAP discussion is the only semi-relevant point raised here, and while the stats certainly do not look good, a year is a LONG time for things to change in racing and \"chemistry\".

Is he your choice to win?  Don\'t give me post position nonsense and the draw as far as speed inside and outside of him.

Is he your win selection?  As favorite or second choice at worst?  You planning on keying him or not?  Let\'s hear it.

If you want to critique my opinion that\'s fine.  But I say he isn\'t winning, I posted why.  So are you saying he is winning?  Let\'s hear it.  If you don\'t now, then I want to hear a final decisioin after the draw but let\'s hear it now.

TGJB

Both of you are too invested in this. Relax.

Prior to the Wood the consensus opinion was that Verrazano was a FREAK. So what changed? The speed in his race blows it out of the gate & everyone is left to jog around the track. Even with a paceless race he still holds on & wins.

Everyone thinks there may not be much pace in the Derby this year. I\'m sorry but there is always an honest pace in the Derby. With 20 horses trying to get a decent spot on the first turn there won\'t be many pulling back. So Verrazano will have a good pace to attack.

Whether Verrazano was fully cranked for the Wood, only a select few people in that crew know but you have to ask, why would he have been at his best? He was in the Derby easily so only needed a nice trip there. I don\'t think we\'ve seen the best from him yet.

The Pletcher question is my biggest/only concern with Verrazano.

aceriley63

Yes.  Don\'t Overanalyze this.

ajkreider

Now, that\'s something worthy of banishment.

TreadHead

No worries TGJB, I am keeping my comments about the horses and my opinions on how they should be best analyzed, not getting sucked into stupid betting contests.

By the way, a TAP horse just won at Churchill, so like I said, a year is a LONG time for things to have changed.  If people don\'t like Verrazano or TAP, that\'s fine, but throwing him out based on last year\'s record seems foolish.  While I do like him, I think I\'ve been pretty spread on my discussion topics here, including defense of horses that raced in Louisiana this year, so I\'m missing how I\'m \"fully invested\" in Verrazano or single-minded in my discussion points.

Either way, I find the discussion fun, I get that people have other opinions and that\'s fine.  I do my best to not make it personal, but when my opinions are in direct conflict with someone else\'s, I think it\'s only natural for that other person to get defensive.

jimbo66

\"Even with a paceless race he still holds and wins\"??????

Nonsense.

He benefited from the paceless race.  He tripped out.

That doesn\'t mean he can\'t win, but don\'t say \"even with a paceless race he wins\".  That is like saying \"even with a quarter mile headstart, he won\".

Tread..stay strong like Boston bro.

There are so many angles on VZ that I can point out that if I released them we\'d only be losing $$. VZ if right and in 1 complete piece wrecks and demolishes this field. I dont partically like latching on to a favorite or 4-1 9/2 in the derby but sometimes you gotta be sharp enough to see what the track gives you and take it. VZ=freak show.
