A versatile Trainer who Won two Graded Stakes yesterday. A Sprint and a Turf Route. Had a second in the Filly Turf Mile and another on the board finish in the Derby. Probably has a better record in the last three years in the Derby than about anybody.

Silver Max I had been told was a mortal in the American Turf the day before.....

Quiet unassuming style and tone probably does him no good from a media standpoint. Smart enough to know however to just let his training do the talking....

Both he and Graham Motion did a great job getting their horses ready for the Derby. Both relished the distance.  WTDW was fying at the end, too.

Romans has sent around 40 horses to NY, his first real east coast presence.

Watch him grab some of that slot money at Belmont & Saratoga with some bombers in the next couple of months. He\'s as sharp & astute a horseman as is in the game.

Frank D,

Agree on Romans as long as he is bringing fast horses. Many new outfits applying for stalls at NYRA causing possible overflow.Smaller NY outfits may be squeezed out. NYRA trying to accommodate everyone.

Quality of NY racing looks strong going into summer with Saratoga meet looking off the charts purse and quality wise.

Romans (and generally all Kentucky based trainers) had a pretty bad record at SAR last summer. I don\'t know why but I\'d be a little careful before jumping in with both feet.

... his dad, Jerry Romans, put over a first time starter (Briarwood) at a big
mutuel ($70 as I recall) on  Derby day back in 1988...

...of course, upon further review, it wasn\'t really a first time starter.
Actually, it wasn\'t even Briarwood.

Kind of sad that Jerry died very young (58) in 2000 and could not enjoy his son\'s
successes on the national stage.

Post of the day.

Ritchie I swore off for the day to not wear out my welcome but on that particular day they may have pulled it off but....

Someone got to the track early to dump a HUGE Show Bet on Seeking the Gold in the Derby. Turns out they punched in on the 6 (whatever # he was) on the 1st race instead of the Derby. This got the suspicions of Track Management and they began looking into EVERYTHING. Unlike today where people can punch in $2.0M worth of Wagers in the last 30 seconds on one particular horse in the Derby and its Yawn.

Back in those days the Card was filled with $5K Claimers because no one gave a SH&T. The Owners were at a Breakfast Brunch that morning and claimed they knew nothing and pushed it off on the barn hands.

Jerry Romans and Mr Frank Jones (owner of Tapits Fly and many others) came from the poor side of town in Louisville and came up together. If Dale has a second father its Frank who can absolutely send it in the windows. They are all really good people and glad to see them winning.
