The final quote in the article is pretty telling, and suggests the answer to your question is something in the neighborhood of \"not very long\" for the fringe player-tracks in the game:

As a fiftysomething who wants to stay in the workforce as long as possible,
nothing makes me happier than to hear from a 28 year old who hath developed a
healthy fear of hard work.
