Thats an impressive gate full of horseflesh. I wonder if the owners of those
runners will be considering the following equines when deciding whether or not
to run in the BC:

GRAZEN-- bad step, bowed tendon Saturday\'s Cal Cup Classic.

BLACKBRIAR -- euthanized following Saturday\'s Cal Cup Classic.

JUNG MAN SCOTT -- suffered condylar fracture during the running of Sunday\'s
Norfolk Stakes, a race in which he dead heated for fourth with JOHN SCOTT, who
also suffered a condylar fracture.

At the very least makes me wonder why some of the Euros would want to run on
the Pro Ride rather than the turf.

Two horses breaking down in one race is a very serious issue.

When it comes to making the decision on whether to come to SA for the BC, I think the connections have to take into account a wide variety of factors. Safety is a major concern. The SA pro-ride surface is safer than the old dirt track, with the catastrophic injury rate down nearly 50%. As SA pres Ron Charles notes, there were 14,000 workouts prior to the recent injuries without a single fatality. Note also that the two recent dirt Breeders Cups were marred by injuries. The \'07 Mth event was not only a disaster because of the weather, but also saw one major catastrophic breakdown. And the headline from the \'06 BC over the CD dirt oval was not the brilliant Invasor - Bernardini race, but the horrific breakdowns*. The injuries and death on the track that day are what gave the synth movement momentum in the first place. There were no catastrophic breakdowns in last year\'s BC over the pro-ride. As for synth vs turf, yes, with the catastrophic injury rate at about 1.5 per thousand for the synth surfaces (vs about 2.0 for dirt), I\'m sure many Euro trainers have concerns, as the rate is much lower for turf racing in Europe.

The crew has SA has to take the recent injuries very seriously, even if the surface is safer than the old dirt track. Two breakdowns in one race is not acceptable, and they risk losing some big stars if the injury rate is not low over the next few weeks.

Tricky swears that almost every horse he sends to race on CALI synths comes out with a soundness problem.Probably just a coincidence.
