This week in the Republic of South Africa:

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban today, Mr van Zyl was found guilty of a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer responsible for the horse CAPE TOWN at the time when a specimen taken from this horse after it participated in the 9th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 5 July 2008, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Phenylbutazone and Oxyphenbutazone which are prohibited substances in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.

The Inquiry Board imposed a fine of R60 000,00. Mr van Zyl has the right of appeal.

Furthermore, in terms of Rule 73.2.2 CAPE TOWN is disqualified from the race and the provisions of Rule 67.7.8 shall apply.

PLEASE NOTE: This is $7,100 in a country where the purses are about a seventh of what ours are and where it costs about a sixth as much to train a horse. This is the equivalent of about $50,000 in the United States.

Barry-- I\'ve quoted this before here. From \"After the Thin Man\" (I think):

William Powell, to a cop: \"What\'s going on\"?

Cop: \"The jock that lost on the odds-on favorite in the last yesterday? They found him hanging in the jocks room\".

Myrna Loy-- \"Boy, the stewards are tough around here\".
