Someone with no historical perspective calling me \"son\"?? You would have to be around 65 years old to call me son. Your answer sounds like someone too youthful to understand the magnitude of those 2 plays.  Calling Tyree\'s catch better is beyond absurd.

The Immaculate Reception, one of the most controversial plays in NFL history, helped launch perhaps the greatest dynasty of the Super Bowl era. It was their first playoff victory and, although they lost the next week to the undefeated Miami team, went on to dominate the 70\'s.

\"The Catch\" also launched the 49ers onto the national stage as one of the premier franchises for the next 15 years.  It started the Montana legacy, one that has earned him the status of one of the all time greats. It is a signature in NFL history.

Look, Tyree\'s catch was spectacular.  But if the Giants don\'t score that TD, how memorable would it be?? If that play occurred in the end zone, you are absolutely 100% correct.  But it didn\'t. A non-scoring play hailed as the greatest play....go figure. The previously 2 plays stand alone. Enjoy the game, the catch, the money you won, etc...   Just don\'t call it better than the other plays.  Or if you want an analogy to help you better understand.....

Tyree\'s catch is Ragozin, the IM and The Catch are Thorograph. I will also add that I am a longtime Raiders fan....no bias here either.  I hate Pitt and SF.

JB, as a long-time Giants fan.......can you help me convince this guy???  This is getting ridiculous.

More important play and better catch are two different questions. In context, this was Swoboda\'s catch against the Orioles.

P Dub:

Yes the Immac Reception is historic (historical?), but its difficult to call
a deflected pass a great athletic play.

I think the most overlooked play in Supe XLII was Ahmad Bradshaw fumbling the
ball away yet somehow wrestling the ball back from the defender before the ref
blew the play dead.

Wasn\'t there a famous Raider play where a Raider back fumbled a ball forward
into the end zone, and a Raider lineman recovered for a TD? Didn\'t this result
in a rule change?

P-Dub,

Also as a (former, and, formerly long-suffering) Raider fan, the IM was not a great catch. It was like a second-basemen catching a soft liner off a cracked bat. The remarkable thing about the IM was the timing of it (4th down, no time left, Raiders ahead), AND, the fact that Tatum\'s hit caused the ball to fly backwards by 20 yards (the MF couldn\'t have just knocked the ball down, NOOOOOO, he had to go for the intimidating hit every effin\' time).

And, yes, Richiebee, the Raiders are responsible for the no forward-fumble rule (along with just a few other rules, ahhhhh, as I fondly recall the silver and black\'s days on the avant garde of football legalities). I believe Todd Christensen and some others conspired to fumble and boot the ball forward on 4th down until it landed in the end zone where a Raider fell on it for the win.

Must also suggest: Lynn Swann\'s falling down catch at midfield in a Supe against (I believe) the Cowpokes?

Good point JB.  Right center field was it???

Stabler about to be sacked, flips it forward underhanded, Pete Banaszak scoops it forward, Casper kicks/stumbles it the final 5 yards for the winning TD. One more reason San Diego hates us.

Magic,

Don\'t know about the soft liner reference.  Harris caught it off his shoetops, sprinted 45 yards down the left sideline and shook Jimmy Warren\'s tackle at the 10 yd line. You disappoint a 9 year old, he remembers everything....and yes, Tatum always goes for the kill shot. I guess blasting Frenchy Fuqua was more im portant than winning a playoff game.

The word great has different meanings. Is it the most spectacular, the most significant, what exactly makes something greater than another?? Love the Swann catch over Washington.  Lets just say Tyree\'s catch is one of the greatest of all time. I\'m good with that.  Congrats JB.

P Dup\'s Raidah Holy Roller call is spot on. I was 12 years old at the time watching that game on the TV row at Montgomery Ward\'s. Raiders play by play man Bill King was going ballistic.

As for the immac reception, Madden still squirms in his sleep over that one. Technically the ball was \"double touched\" and could not be advanced downfield according to the rules at the time but this is the Raiders.

The Holy Roller even has its own page on Wikipedia.

P-Dub,

I probably have a bias here. Yeah, Franco did catch it off his shoetops, and I probably don\'t give him enough credit. I think I\'ve just seen that replay way too many times (the sob STILL hasn\'t dropped it!), and the after-the-fact seeming inevitability of it (what with the supposed divine intervention, and all) makes it seem easier than it was.

My most bitter memory as a Raiders fan ... the \"phantom fumble\" by Denver in the AFC championship game. I SOOOO wanted to see a Raiders-Cowboys superbowl. Instead, we got \"The Big Lie\" and the Cowpokes ran roughshod over the Craig Morton-led Broncos. Bothers me to this day.
