If I had a large Plantation Stud Farm, I swear I would go back to breeding stamina mares to stamina sires and would win maybe the next 10 consecutive Derby\'s.

All of this speed Breeding came home to roost this year, Finally.

Smarty was the rare exception to the rule last year and while Funny Cide is game and fun to root for, he developed early and has not much since his Derby win. It is beginning to take effect.

The short sighted mentallity of Breeding speed to speed so the horse comes out running in April of his two year old training sale breeze is ruining the bred.

That is back-to-back Triple Crown Races where the winner received a 100 Beyer. Crawling come home fractions are more common. Look at all the preps. The time has come to move the Derby distance to 1 mile and 1/8 and the Belmont to 1 mile and 1/4.

Silver Charm:

I agree with your assessment that the proliferation of speed on speed breeding is not desirable. However, I do not understand how a reduction in the distances of the Derby and Belmont would encourage the industry to breed for more stamina.

If the implication is that drugs are out of the picture I would agree. However, it might be hasty yet to conclude they were absent from this years race.

Funny is bred very well on his female side and he might have been the only member of that crop not running on medications.

If Beyer said the Belmont was a 100 he\'s full of it.

Thats was once the geriatric argument of Lukas before he figured out how to train for a Belmont Stakes.  The day they shorten the TC races or change their spacing is the day I concentrate on MLB.

The breeders will not change, they are too greedy and probably for good reason, its how they make a living.

Watch the replay of the Derby stretch run again.

It resembled a mustang herd in Kansas.
