Ask the Experts / Re: Unethical Frankel

When the tackler helps the ballcarrier to his feet, he doesn\'t tell him to expect a blitz on the next play. When Veritek talks to Giambi between pitches, he doesn\'t tell him the hit and run is coming. The issue here isn\'t socializing between competitors, it\'s divulging strategy before it happens.

The fact that Dutrow would brag about this to a reporter just proves these guys think they are above the rules, whether regulatory or ethical.

Mel won\'t have to waste any time mapping out a three year old campaign for the horse, she\'ll never make it. He\'s lucky the owner is his wife, maybe he won\'t be fired.

A related note, but not nearly as scientific. A book came out in the last year or two called Race Horse Breeding Theories that is a collection of articles by various authors. Rommy Faversham, who writes for the Thoroughbred Times, wrote a fascinating (at least to me) chapter about in-breeding to the female line, especially to certain foundation mares. He ran a number of analyses of mare in-breeding that produced a statistically significant increased number of stakes winners. It\'s not handy so I can\'t quote it, but I found the analysis pretty compelling. I used the method for choosing stallions for my mares this year, so in 2010 I\'ll let you know how well it worked.

I agree with your conclusion. So, as handicappers, can we use that conclusion to our advantage? That is, rather than quit the game in disgust or just play minor tracks where these guys don\'t show up, can we ascertain any patterns that \"tell\" us when one of the magical move ups is more likely to occur (or not) and bet accordingly? I don\'t begin to have the answer, but maybe some of TG\'s trainer stats, if parsed correctly, would shed some light on this.

Now that we\'ve mastered binomial distribution, can any of you mathematicians explain how to apply Six Sigma methodology to the handicapping process? I don\'t know about you guys, but I\'ve been experiencing a hell of a lot more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

I use Neteller to fund several accounts, and have never had a problem, once it was finally set up. Only issue is that for the free service, it takes 3 or 4 days for a transfer from my bank account to be credited to my Neteller account, I guess so they can play the float. So you have to plan ahead. But if the funds are already in Neteller, the transfer to the wagering account is immediate.

Have Litfin review your performance. Maybe he can convince your wife to give you a better fig

The Stable Alert on BRIS allows you to get notified whenever an offspring of a particular sire is entered.

As a passive but regular reader of this board who rarely posts, I just wanted to mention how happy I am to see a thread like this that actually discusses handicapping, without the words \"Ragozin\", \"acknowledge\" or \"lawyers\". I come here to improve my handicapping and my management of my own horses, and I look forward to Jerry\'s response and a lively discussion.

The best analogy is the NFL, even though betting on the games isn\'t even legal in 49 states. They do a great job of requiring that injuries be disclosed, and even categorized (doubtful, probable, etc.). The integrity of the game overrides the privacy concerns of the players. Despite the full disclosure of all material information, there are still people who can consistently make money betting football. The key is, no one who bets on football worries that the game isn\'t on the up and up and that someone else has inside information. Horse racing should be held to the same standard.

Jerry\'s got to be talking about Madcap. And the upsetter is Josh\'s Madelyn at 20-1 ML.

I think EA and BB are the likeliest winners because they\'ve got the best chance of running -2. Each time EA has run a fig greater than zero, he comes back with a 2-5 point improvement, which gives him a great shot at -2 or less. Same with BB, Jerkens has figured this horse out, it looks like he\'s cycling back to -2 again.

Ask the Experts / Xpress Bet
May 04, 2004, 08:18:36 PM
It\'s disappointing that TG has partnered with Xpress Bet and promotes them on the TG home page. As a horseman and a bettor, I believe Magna\'s restrictive business practices are bad for the industry. The current state of the game makes it more important than ever that the races be accessible and bettable by as many people as possible. This is especially true with the Triple Crown races, which is the best time to make casual fans into serious players. Magna\'s practices only serve to increase the divisiveness within the industry when collaboration is what is needed. I hope TG will reconsider its promotion of Magna\'s business.
