Ask the Experts / Re: Repole interview with Nick Luck

I listened to 5 minutes and that was enough. What a Jackass. \"I am a disruptor.\" Who even says that? And, to what end. Learned a lot about him with the Derby/Forte sham. Not my cup of tea and I have owned horses since 1990. No thanks!

\"Adversity builds greatness.\"

Repole quote when Forte was scratched before the Derby. I knew the horse was going to be scratched days before the Derby (a friend is a jockey agent). Why they kept it under wraps until the Derby only Repole knows. I guess in addition to his apparent love for adversity he enjoys the ego driven...last minute...front page shock factor. A shame these mega-rich guys with their mega-famous trainers are allowed to put a stain on the sport. They think they are smarter than everyone but they just are not. Just common con men.

A joy when they are caught even though as you say, the financial penalties are inconsequential.

The problem is there is never a consequence. 10-day suspension for a Grade 1 DQ -- WOW. $1,000 fine -- OH MY! Ridiculous. At least Repole forfeits $192,500. Pletcher forfeits 10% of that. Forte loses Grade 1 off his resume. More than a little justice even though the stewards ruling on top of the purse losses are nothing. Bettors get nothing. At least there is finally some justice. Some... .

I know the #1 and #2 at Del Mar. I will see them this weekend and will realize how \"transparent\" they are about this topic. I understand (as an owner) the CAW bets add to the horse purses that are based on handle. It still sucks that 33% of the handle get a -- say -- 10% rebate when normal bettors get hit with 20% plus takeout. Any economist would say you are crazy to participate in this, even though I will. My feeling is if they feel the CAWs are necessary, then open up some pools (my original post\'s question) without the CAWs getting rewarded with rebates.

I will read your article tonight. The reasoning at Del Mar is the race purses are dependent on handle since no gaming is involved in the equation. But, without having additional data -- it seems apparent that while the CAW handle increases (at a lower takeout due to rebates) effectively diminishing track returns, at the same time regular non-CAW handle is decreasing at a much higher takeout due to no-rebates. Not sure what the net results are.

Well, answering my own question after some research the answer is CAW play allowed in all pools. They bet up tp 38% of the total in several pools. Their track betting rebates reduce as time gets closer to post time. Other than that -- no restriction at Del Mar unlike NYRA tracks.

Looking forward to Del Mar -- a track that I attend every day. Does anyone know if Del Mar is restricting the play by CAWs in any of the pools, (thinking that I heard they will). I would like to avoid their play when possible. Thanks.

Personally, I would be more concerned with his running style. Is he one dimensional (like Game on Dude/Bayern) -- other brilliantly fast Baffert horses that cannot pass another horse?

Baffert won the Derby with a wire-to-wire horse (War Emblem) but that style seldom wins. Maybe, he can pass another horse. Maybe, he is good enough that he doesn\'t have to.

Goog luck with this decision. It can be a lot of fun and of course frustrating at times. A few suggestions --

1) Get a good trainer and one that you can trust (not impossible). This is by far your most important decision.
2) The trainer should generally know the physical condition of horses on his (or her) circuit or will know folks who do (including jockey agents or clockers).
3) Target a horse that can be improved -- by changing from a bad trainer to a good trainer, by changing track surfaces or distance, or equipment.
4) Small syndicates have always been the best way to go for me. Money stretches further and is more fun.
