If you want to know more about the Racing Times read Crist\'s autobiography. Its pretty interesting. TG even gets a mention. I was shocked to learn that he\'s only in his late forties, but I guess an early heart attack can make one look like David Crosby.

TGJB,
I noticed on the drf website that you are on the list of speakers (next to Friedman) scheduled to appear at the handicapping expo in February. Assuming you guys aren\'t on the undercard of some prizefight, what subjects are you going to be speaking about?

P.S. Mall thank you for the file. It was funny and my fiance actually enjoyed it more than I did.

Ask the Experts / Happy Recap

First of all, I always preferred Murphy\'s Oklahoma optimism to Kiner\'s prolonged stupors. Go easy on me. I\'m still hopeful.

Secondly, maybe Mr. Barry should tackle this right now. I\'m getting bombarded with questions regarding matrimonial stuff (i.e. where to register and what needless things to get).
TG doesn\'t have a registry program does it?

I\'m listening as always.
The article is also at thesaratogaspecial.com. I think it ran on 8/4 or 8/3. Its definitely a subject worthy of further research, but I think that you\'ll be reliant on the subjectivity of horsemen and people in charge of maintenance over the years. Its not like you can go to the Keeneland Library and substantiate claims of various tracks\' depths. However, given what Mr. Porcelli said to me, its pretty obvious that track surfaces have changed through the years and frequently change during the course of individual days.
Maybe I\'ll speak to him again before next year\'s meet, but I just got engaged so I\'ve got more pressing matters about which to worry.

Ask the Experts / Pine Gold Whatever?
August 24, 2003, 12:07:02 PM
Hello,
Its funny Jim P wrote that because I viewed that race basically the same and thought that McLaughlin horse was an underlay but certainly not a bet against. I didn\'t want to use value Rock Slide because of the post.

This leads me to my question. Did you key Pine Gold place in the finale? I thought he was much best and thought him to be the proper key with the eventual winner, Tescher\'s recent maiden winner and Sleeping Potion. Did I put too much faith in that Delaware Park 7?

Ask the Experts / a quick question for AB or JB

Sirs,
In DEL 5th, what does Grant\'s Vic \"tz\" notation mean?
Is this just an error, or part of the reason why you\'re moving the scale back 5 points?

Thank you very much

Anybody else out there have any thoughts on DEL card??

Hi TGAB and TGJB,

How playable is the 4 in the 12th race? Is there a reason to be skeptical of the MED yl figures? It seems as Mr. Miller is pretty good 2nd off layoff.

Also, I had a question about mistimed races while  you were away.

Alan,
Good to see you on Saturday. Lisa actually cashed 4 of 5 races, albeit chalky ones.

I was wondering (now that the @ 1 1/8 mile Hialeah races are no longer) which main circuit tracks\' have the greatest timing differences? I\'ve heard that saratoga inner turf times are suspect, although i\'m not sure why.

Thanks to you or anyone able, or willing, to reply.

TGJB,

I\'m well aware of the 2000 Wood discrepancy, having been on this site over the past couple years.

I guess what I\'m really asking is the following: wouldn\'t TG users be better off focusing more of their efforts on  those tracks, such as aqu, golden gate and monmouth, that would theoretically have more significant and frequent intra-day variant changes?

Maybe the inefficiencies at these tracks (assuming there are more cases of disparate figures) deserve increasing attention from handicappers, especially since, bounce and condition theories aren\'t, at least in the former case, as powerful in terms of provding value as they once were.

Your point regarding horses coming off the 01 BC dead rail is well taken, but it seems  that if that  NYRA superintendent is right, moisture content would be all over the place at a place like golden gate fields. As a result, it would seem that there are more opportunties at such ovals.

Or are such days where you have to split variants drastically just as common at less notorious tracks, which aren\'t near water or other havoc producing problems?

TGJB,

I wanted to follow up on your earlier post regarding changing moisture content.

Your post suggests that figures based on so-called \"objectively constructed variants\" are more likely to be inconsistent or misleading than figures which try to take into account changing track speeds within a card (e.g. Thoro-graph).

If this is the case, it implies that t-graph users might enjoy an advantage over other bettors when evaluating horses that have raced on certain track-changing days.

Have you, or any other sheet users, noticed more success when betting on or against horses that have previously raced over tracks which experienced radically changing speeds and therefore were given suspect numbers by the masses?

thanks,
charlie

Ask the Experts / Re: Where's Patent?
November 01, 2002, 09:28:24 PM
mr patent brings up a good point regarding the limited liabilities of tracks, not that i am justifying that status, at least not in this egregious case.

i did some research this summer on an instance at saratoga that occurred on the Lady\'s Secret Whitney undercard in which the stewards took down the wrong horse.

a horse jumped the inner turf rail during the stretch run and the stewards incorrectly ruled that the eventual unofficial winner bore in, causing the accident, when in fact the first horse past the wire was a couple paths away in the middle of the stretch. it never made contact with the injured horse.

i think there was a three horse spill, and amidst the confusion they didn\'t heed the innocent jock\'s pleas (i believe it was either santos or crueget--the horse was named altemuse if i\'m not mistaken).

there were no refunds and the stewards admitted that they blew it the next day. you can look it up.

if something that blatant can go uncorrected than i\'m not too optimistic about future lawsuits. but i hope i\'m wrong.

i see that banks hill, starrine and golden apples will be facing one another again in a few weeks. i am wondering what many on the board think of the rematch.

starrine enjoyed a masterful ride. can one expect her to go forward in her third try off the layoff, especially since frankel typically doesn\'t get more development at this late stage according to TG?

banks hill should do better on firmer ground. also, i felt like i could touch golden apples from my chilly grandstand seat. does that mean she\'ll come back in a month or was that just another \"effort\" that might have taken some more out of her?

also, how does juddmonte deal with b.h. getting beaten by the owner/trainer?

thanks again JB and AB, especially AB for tempering my opinion on ruby reception. i had some poor reads on saturday, but none as bad as my misread of your FRIDAY invite, jerry.
i went on saturday, not knowing anyplace to eat anyway. let it be known that the food at magnums is an underlay.
