Ask the Experts / Re: Frankel
June 22, 2012, 06:33:05 AM
Over on the TwinSpires blog, I took a look at Franke\'s place in history using Brisnet.com\'s Class Ratings, which is sort of a riff on the \"who beat who and by how much\" motif made popular by The Jockey Club\'s Performance Rates that Thoroughbred Times publishes.

Anyway, Workforce has the highest rating of all time as the only horse to crack the 130 barrier, but Frankel\'s steady stream of 125+ numbers IS impressive and about equal with Sea The Stars and Ghostzapper in my mind.

I\'m unclear who this applies to?

And they American horses from the past 25 years on there, but not Secretariat or Spectacular Bid. Surely either of the World Records would rank among the ten all-time best performances.

Is ThoroGraph willing to share what Frankel\'s sheet looked like heading into the Queen Anne?

I don\'t think Gulfstream could play host to the BC anymore because of its new set up.

Yeah, I definitely got that one wrong. I should know better than to trust the future pools to tell me anything.

She\'s a bet against for me at odds on, but it may be more a no bet than bet someone else. We\'ll see what else looks good in the pick four, I guess.

Wow... going against Sinister Minister was an amazing display of handicapping prowess. I mean, who would possibly have thought to toss a gate-to-wire winner on Keeneland\'s old main track going an extra furlong and unlikely to get an easy pace?

Man, why didn\'t I think of that rather than emptying the retirement account and betting it on Sinister Minister to win the Derby.

I just cannot emphasize enough the genius it took to go against Sinister Minister. Well done!

She\'s not going to be 2-5. She wasn\'t even the favorite in the Oaks future wager.

Maybe she\'s even money because of the ridiculous buzz involved, but she won\'t be 2-5.

Justwhistledixie was the favorite in the only Oaks future wager. I\'m sure she\'ll take some money.

I\'d love to get 6-1 on Stardom Bound.

He\'s not a rider that I won\'t use on a marginal contender, but he\'s definitely not a rider in which I upgrade a horse\'s chances just because he\'s in the bike.

April has convinced me that Julian Leparoux and Rafael Bejarano are the future.

I didn\'t like any of those horses and used Thorograph each day, so the figures seem right.

Sadly, I only cashed on Informed Decision (loved Selva and spread in the Ashland but didn\'t land on the winner).

Ventura was clearly best (how many more feed did she travel?). Gomez said she gets lazy once she makes the lead.

Did you really pick up that stat or just read it on the Keeneland website?

I think it\'s more likely that everyone was ducking Acoma, who I think has a chance to threaten Zenyatta and/or Forever Together as leading female this year.

Ask the Experts / Dubai World Cup card

I thought ThoroGraph was spot on in all races. I didn\'t have the bankroll to cover all opinions that offered value, but some of those gigantic five-figure prices were not impossible off the info ThoroGraph supplied. The pick 3s were especially juicy.

As someone already noted, the Sheema Classic and Dubai Duty Free in particular were a bonanza for those who believed the numbers. Thanks for the info.

As for the UAE Derby, I\'m pleased to report that I have a future wager on Regal Ransom at 90-to-1 for the KY Derby. Hitting that would pay for my next trip to Vegas (to cash the ticket, naturally!) and then some.
