Title: Tonalist
Post by: Michael D. on August 24, 2014, 06:50:54 AM
first Tonalist loses to WS in the JDandy because Clement wanted to lose a horse race. not because WS was good, but because the trainer wanted to lose a horse race. and now Tonalist loses because he ran a 1/2 in 47.5 over a surface that a NY bred 3 yr old filly just skipped over in 1:21.89.

do I have this right?

Mike,

Tonalist(Rosario) was just not going to let Bayern slowly control the front end.The ride was over agressive and cost Tonalist late.Pace fig for the 1 1/4 on the warm side which Tonalist forced. Wicked Strong had reasonably good dynamics in front of him, nothwithstanding being wide into turns, had little excuse to get run down from behind by an ordinary type in a last half of 51.66

Weak Beyer of 102, along with the 51.66 last half speaks to an overall common Travers, figuratively speaking.

Mike, WS tracked a length and a half off Tonalist, and ran a length and a half further in ground. if you give either of the two some sort of trip edge (vs the other), it has to be a pretty small one.

Clement had 2 modest breezes in this horse after a light Training regimen post Belmont. The stiff works used by the Bafferts and others to get these 3YO\'s primed are not his style or say a Bill Mott and that is why they don\'t excel in this Class of 3YO Classics. Assuming this horse doesn\'t have persistent quarter crack issues he is going to be ONE HELL of a 4YO on Dirt or Turf.

BTW why did Muragh put the whip away with 90 yards to go? 40 yards maybe. Was this a miscalculation that he could strong arm ride him out to the wire? If so where do I go to get my money back ;-)

Mike,

Agree but always feel the horse pressing,Tonalist in this case,is more disadvantaged. Not a big differnce from WS and cant put it into lengths.

Muragh gave the Filly in the Ballerina a perfect ride. Got out of the gate and got off the rail in perfect position. So sometimes the split second decisions work and well sometimes.....

That Fillies pedigree in not your typical NY Bred pedigree and from here on needs to be ignored. If she stays sound she will be a force from 7F or less after they were ambitious with her once or twice earlier in her career.

One last thought on Clement and even Mott as Classic 3YO trainers. They both have won the Belmont at a Mile and a Half. Seems about right.....

I think its more the fact that the Belmont is the last race in the Triple Crown
series than the distance of the race.

TAP has also won the Belmont (twice)...and only one other Triple Crown race...
with many more opportunities than Mott or Clement.

Would not be surprised to see Tonalist tried on the turf at some point; he is kin
to Riskaverse, who was a G1 winner and a G1 producer on the lawn.
