Title: Wise Guy Reflections
Post by: Tavasco on April 30, 2014, 05:22:29 PM
I don\'t think there is an official list of prior year \"wise guy\" horses, so I thought I\'d ask for some memories. I.e. name of horse, rationale/source, result?

Seems I remember Orb last year, Nehro a few back. I guess Intense Holiday this year (since he got the bounce out of the way in his last)

Dollar Bill was a big time wise-guy horse.

Let me check my cigar box full of losing Derby tickets.  I think I have most of them covered.

A good friend of mine in the breeding industry took me to the Churchill back stretch on the Sunday before the Derby in 2006. We walked barn to barn,  seeing who we could see. Right in front of my eyes I see THE most gorgeous horse I had ever seen in person. With my untrained eye even I could see that this one was special. The rest of the morning all I hear from the wise guys at Churchill is that Sweetnorthernsaint is the horse to beat. I buy the hype, I think he was even bet down to the favorite. Derby day comes and that beautiful animal I saw up close wins going away. I\'ll never buy the hype again!! Good luck to all!

I\'m sure I\'m missing some, but a few that stand out who got talked-up, bet-down, and then ran up the track:

99 - Stephen Got Even - ran 14th @ 5-1
01 - Dollar Bill - 15th @ 6-1
02 - Saarland - 10th @ 6-1
03 - Ten Most Wanted - 9th @ 6-1
06 - Sweetnorthernsaint - 7th @ 5.5-1
08 - Colonel John - 6th @ 9/2
09 - Dunkirk - 11th @ 5-1
11 - Midnight Interlude - 16th @ 9-1
12 - Union Rags - 7th @ 5-1

Nice job, I bit on sweet northern big time.  You had to remind me.  Several good prospects loom large this tear.

Pants on Fire for me. I completely discounted the bet on Rosie and the get drunk and bet a horse with a name like \"Pants On Fire\" scenarios.

completely got suckered into Saarland..afterwards all I could say to myself was \"you didn\'t even like that horse to win any of his other races but you play him to win the derby, you idiot\"

That\'s a great list.  I don\'t think union rags belongs on it, as he was winter book favorite and clear favorite till the Florida derby

But the rest bring back memories.

Dollar bill, Saarland and Stephen got even are always rhe first that come to my mind.

Rags doesn\'t belong, but otherwise, a whole lotta chandelier-hanging eeeh-dirt types on that list . . . #surehe\'llgetupnexttimeNOT
