Title: Candy Boy: Final Figure versus SA Derby running style
Post by: jbelfior on April 27, 2014, 01:40:54 PM
So if you have looked at Jerry\'s sheets, there\'s no way one would consider Candy Boy. Perfectly understandable. And if you watched the Santa Anita Derby, you would also see CB being up with a strong early pace and tiring late which is also understandable considering he was off for 2 months. Probably a good condition race,no?
So if he sits back (preferable style for him IMO)and makes one run going 5 wide he probably cuts the beaten margin in half. So his final number puts him in the discussion, no?
Better conditioning race, or better number??? I\'ve decided to use in the exotics at 25-1 to find out.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Joe

Maybe.  I would never try to discourage anybody from a 20-1 shot, but boy, candy boy was despicable in the SA derby.  I think he was worse than his figure shows.

I was in the camp of thinking CC would not be fully cranked for that race, not needing the points, and candy boy would run well.

Also think the pace was just average.  Not fast.

This kind of ties to the post I made earlier about jocks making decisions about running styles that might not fully suit the horse in a larger field.  Made a similar comment about Intense Holiday and the difference in his 2 races, he was ridden much more aggressively in the LA Derby (presumably due to the extreme speed nature of the track that day and an attempt to try to play to the track instead of what necessarily might be best for the horse), and as a result he wasn\'t anywhere near as impressive in the lane as he was in the Risen Star.

Candy Boy hasn\'t been ridden too far off the pace all that much, so this is nothing more than conjecture, but if he is they type of horse that would be better served relaxing and being patient in the early parts of a race, and his connex just have not been doing that in the SA races due to everyone knowing the extreme speed nature of the track and them actually making an attempt to win the races instead of what might be best for the horse.... then it is possible that on a more demanding track with a more patient trip that a large new top is waiting on Sat.

It would kind of be like discussing WS prior to the Wood.  Looked terrible on paper figure-wise compared to the others.  He was more patiently ridden in FL this winter, to be sure, but if it is simply a matter of his A game being coming from off the pace and spending all winter on a track where that just doesn\'t work, then yes it is possible for a huge new top when switching to CD.

I\'m not going to be putting him in the win position myself, and still on the fence about tris.  Need to hear more about how he\'s doing this week and how good his workout yesterday really was (some ppl saying B+ as opposed to A)

Last time Sadler shipped some \"Candy\" to Louisville it didn\'t go so well. Three consecutive preps at Santa Anita (pro ride) back then including winning the SAD.  He paired his 2 year old top in the SAD and then completely melted in the Derby.  Basically the same story for Sadler\'s other 2010 entry, Line of David.  Too bad he doesn\'t have an extra \"d\" in his last name - would be one of the best last names for a trainer.

Wrong Candy Ride horse.

Chocolate Candy was a Hollendorfer that ran fifth.

Sydneys Candy the Sadler up the track.

Candy Boy looks weak on pedigree for ten furlongs regardless of how they try to ride him.

He might\'ve hated Santa Anita but he looks like he was tugging/pulling at least two of the three times Stevens rode him so he might not want to be taken too far back.

Candy Ride/In Excess mare should want less distance not more.
Not a lot to like about this horse other than maybe he likes CD more than SA.

It is if you bet him to finish anywhere in the top 4.  Horse and connections might not mind, bettors do.
