for what its worth....Various comments from several closers/observers described work as, \"lethargic\",\"indifferent\", \"under pressure\" and \"not as good as Fla works\"

Jerry

\"lethargic\" was from Bruno\'s twitter account.

Welsch: \"General A Rod 5/8\'s 1:03.32 last 1/4 :24.32 under pressure out 1:17.32. Not as impressive looking as in his Fla. works.\"      He then also spoke more at length about the work on the Byk show later in the morning, saying same basic thing, that works in florida were better. Said he is due to work back on Tuesday.

Bruno: \"General A Rod worked a lethargic 5f without hood in 103 flat\"

Jack Jenkins (@VOLJACK79) who knows Maker said: \"Maker said #GeneralARod never picked it up until he passed the big screen.  He said he had his eye on it the entire stretch. Maker also said he was pleased how he finished up the work.  \"I\" don\'t think he was looking for a lot coming off quick work this past week.\"

During the NTRA press conference yesterday, of his three horses, Maker talked a lot more, than the other two (Arod and HH), about how well VIC had come on since LouD. Said \"really moved fwd...\" etc. But mind you he did not really get asked to specifically comment about ARod in same fashion....for what it\'s worth.

Here\'s the transcript of the teleconference. http://www.ntra.com/en/news-media/teleconferences/2014/4/22/road-to-the-triple-crown-teleconference-for-april-22-2014/

The specific quote re VIC: Mike Maker: \"Yes, I feel he still needs to move forward, which I think he has.  You know, he was impressive in that race, but having said that, he had everything his own way.  But since the race he\'s really moved forward; put on weight, he looks fabulous and he\'s been very aggressive which, you know, built a lot of character for him, so I see a lot of positive signs in Vicar\'s in Trouble.\"

He works without them.  He also works solo.  Being a speed horse Maker clearly does not want this colt going to fast in the am.  Still under the impression that the blinkers may come off for the race. bbb

Hopper sure seemed to go well.  Outworked a pretty decent horse in Drill.

He was referring to Chitu, I believe.  More of a general statement.  Hooper looked the goods this morning, to me.  Very nice work.

Have not but giving serious consideration this year. Seems like last few years how they come into it has grown in importance.

Anyone have any opinions on how Maker will fare or has fared under enhanced security/testing?

If you are referring to clocker reports -- I like National Turf. Based in Southern California.
Title: Re: General A Rod - Potential Sale?
Post by: phil23 on April 27, 2014, 01:54:33 PM
IN Haskin\'s piece today, he references a potential sale to a \"new and interesting owner\" for ARod, by Derby day. 2nd time I\'ve heard this rumour.

Does this bode well (horse is sound, buyer must see some potential) or does it bode ill (current owner is not 100% on him, wants to take the money while he can)?

Anyone else heard anything about this?

Maybe Covello is buying his favorite horse....

Lmao.

They turned down our substantial offer in January. They are taking an offer now

Take from that what you want. I know what I take from it.

Covelj  - what do you make of it then?? I liked him a little before his works....but they really have been off. No?

Work was awful

Gallops since have been better

Doesn\'t matter though as I think the horse is very distance limited. Had dream trip in Fla Derby and lost ground in stretch to another distance limited horse.

Has never won a two turn race for a reason. If he could settle early and make a run, he would be better off but he needs the blinks to focus him and the blinks put him on the pace and he can\'t last going fast early.

We had a very different plan with him if we had bought him. Think he\'s a poly/turf horse

All that said, several very smart people I know like the horse so don\'t let me talk you off him if you like him.

I hate him for this race though, he won\'t be on any of my tickets.

Agree. Don\'t see any fight or showed no true grit in FL. Thats a no no for me

An enigmatic sort for sure Jim... but pure racehorse.  Run all day colt with the attitude that you would expect given his lineage. Well made grandson of fu peg,   got in again late in the last prep and the boy had to stop riding him for a stride or two, Mike said it was the crowd (fwiw).  Experimented with cheaters, adjusted cheaters  and did figure eights up the chute in the dark over the weekend, seldom a good activity,  unless a talented buyer was in attendance.   Personally this is the closest I have had to a future book winner in limited attempts.  bbb

Probably so Mike.  Sort of explains why Maker has been tip toeing around with this one. Needs a solid work tomorrow, blinkers or not. bbb
