Title: Gov Charlie worked 110.4 at CD this morning
Post by: covelj70 on May 13, 2013, 07:06:47 AM
I haven\'t seen/heard any details of the work but Feb Biz worked in 111 so I am assuming they worked together and that Gov Charlie outworked an older graded stake winner.

I continue to believe he is the biggest threat to Orb on Saturday and not any of the horses that weren\'t in Orb\'s zip code in the Derby.

Anything can happen in a horse race but I don\'t think it\'s too likely that a bunch of horses that couldn\'t get anywhere near Orb in the Derby (either TG figures wise or in the actual race) are suddenly going to jump forward that much on Satuday and Orb doesn\'t seem to be training like he\'s going to go backward so I think Gov Charlie is the only one who is talented enough to give Orb any kind of challenge at all.

I am absolutely rooting for a triple crown bid.  I have been at the Belmont three times with a triple crown on the line and the excitment is outrageous that day with the triple crown on the line.

He has the numbers to beat Orb but my concern is the hoof injury.I would think horses that work that fast are healthy, but that is one thing I know very little about.

Vito,

It\'s a very good point.

I would be inclined to think that with the 3 fast works at CD over the last 3 weeks, that the foot is 100% again.

He worked fast last week and the fact that he came back and breezed 110 and 4 today tells me he\'s doing very well.

It would be unusual to work that well if the foot was bothering him,

per drf. Gov Charlie started about a length behind and never passed fed biz even though he was under some urging.

I think I read where Barnes said that he never passed Fed Biz and that they had to scrub on him a bit to keep up. Barnes said, \"he was under urging to keep up\".
Haven\'t seen the work so don\'t know but he needs something like this to get his fitness up for Saturday. Heard Oxbow worked well this morning though.

yeah, just read this on DRF myself.

that certainly doesn\'t seem very good.

that\'s not the kind of work you are looking for at all.

looks like back to the drawing board to find someone underneath Orb.

If I was going to any of the Derby horses a second chance, I guuess it would be Luckyday who we already know is capable of at least staying close to Orb from the Florida Derby.

He trained well leading up to the Derby so I have to believe it was the track that caused that noneffort.  I didnt\' see his breeze myself yesterday but someone I respect alot loved the breeze.

Goldencents ran in the Derby like he trained leading up to the Derby so he\'s a toss for me in the Preakness.  Oxbow and Will Take Charge clearly had alot of (legal) vet work done prior to the Derby as they both ran much better than they were training leading up to the race and so I don\'t see them even running the same race which wasn\'t good enough, let alone jumping up alot.  So, I guess that leaves me with Luckyday under Orb

I think Luckyday posses no threat whatsoever to Orb in terms of winning on Saturday, I am looking for horses underneath at this point

I find it very interesting that as an owner of some very nice horses you put a lot of emphasis on workouts. This is not meant to be critical, but I have always looked at workouts as not how fast or slow because trainers work their horses differently. As far as how  they look when they work,I am no where on that one.

Vito,

It depends on the horse but for some of them, I put a tremendous emphasis on the workouts.

Some examples of my own horses,

Screenplay isn\'t a flashy workhorse at all, especially on the dirt so as long as he\'s moving comfortably, I would never enter or not enter a race with him based on how he works.

Swift Warrior on the other hand is the exact oppossite.  When he breezes well, he runs well, when he\'s not breezing/galloping well, we don\'t usually even put him in the gate let alone expect him to run well.  He has a bunch of mostly minor physical issues and when they are bugging him, it shows in the morning.  When he\'s feeling good, he breezes well.

Falling Sky is another story all together, he always works well in the mornings so how he\'s breezing isn\'t really an indication of how he is going to run.

The more I know about a horse, the more emphasis I put on the workouts.  If I know how the horse typically trains when he doing well, that\'s very valuable.

Finally, as I typically remind people on this subject so as not to get ahead of myself in all of this.  There are many people who forgot more about how to analyze workouts and morning training in the last 24 hours than I will ever know.  My racing manager is one of those people.  I am totally defferential to those folks when I watch horses train.  I am an absolute novice on the subject compared to these folks. That said, most of the folks in the media who opine on morning works either a) don\'t know what they are looking at, or b) are hamstrung by their need to maintain relationships with the connections so they don\'t say negative things about the big outfits.

I mention this last point as there were some pretty prominent horses that were training terribly before the Derby (inclding 2 of the favorites) that the media never said a negative word about and to the contrary, actually were pretty favorable toward.

Anytime, you have been a phenomenal addition to this board both with the great calls on the horses and how nice you are.

good stuff

I agree that Vito has been a very good addition over here.  I never knew they had good posters on the other board (hadn\'t been there in over a decade or so).

Are you kiddin\'? That Ken Sherman guy is epic.

Seriously, it makes me wonder how involved Friedman is these days, to let crabgrass take over the place. Sherman\'s so bad he choked off Chuckles and Class, which takes some doing. I had to throw them out of here to accomplish that.

Crabgrass? These days, that board is the online equivalent of Grey Gardens, covered almost completely by the invasive species Kenshermansica.

\"It would sure be nice to get the Preakness behind us and come back home.  If that were to happen and everything were to go good, we would be very comfortable here\"

shug this morning after orb wored :47

"I thought it was freaky," McGaughey said. "It didn't look like he got out of a high gallop. It gave me chills, I'll tell you that. That's what good horses do."
