The key takeaway from this is the point I made in my TDN piece a year or two ago (and here the decade before that, and since). The industry is NOT doing the job it should be in policing drugs. Note the part about out-of-date testing procedures in Florida, for example. All assumptions that they are, and that cheaters are being caught, are a joke.

If test results were published in detail, including the testing method used, it would be quickly apparent to anyone looking seriously what the differences are between location A, where certain trainers move horses up, and location B, where they don\'t. Until that information is made public it\'s impossible to even have the conversation.

Two points that were in dispute with someone no longer allowed to post here are cleared up in this article:

1-- It\'s silly to say drug users are usually caught. As Dr. Scollay\'s comments make clear, the testing procedures in Fla are inadequate, just for one example.

2-- Clenbuterol DOES build muscle mass.

Didn\'t get a chance to read every word but....

Can\'t claim its the NY Times doing a bash job.

 Apologists need not apply.

As a vet, I tended to side with the other vet on the board regarding the medication issues.  But this excellent, informative article has swayed me over to JB\'s conviction.  My question is, do the \"supertrainers\" simply use the legal substances in a more intensive manner, and perhaps do some stacking, or are there other substances (milkshakes) that are not on the list that are being used.

Reasonable questions. And I think 4 more articles in the series coming.
