Title: TAP's Mentor
Post by: bstaubs22 on March 23, 2013, 11:22:40 AM
With all the talk of TAP and KY labs, does anyone have any thoughts about DWL who was TAP\'s mentor? DWL has been on fire shipping into FG and OP where the testing may be underdeveloped. I ask this because all of a sudden his career has been rejuvenated and he ships into Turfway today, and I am very interested to see how his runners perform in these stakes races.

The first sign of DWL suddenly back on the scene for me was his breeders cup juvenile sprint winner.  That observation is in hindsight as at the time I truly thought it was a fluke.  Then, he had some young horses run some big numbers at Churchill in November.  Optimizer has been racing faster than at any point in his career on some fig makers\' numbers.  His horse Broken Spell looks very live and very dangerous today at Turfway--certainly a use on Synth in exactas/tris.  Another interesting note for me is that Red Wings in the Rushway ran really well for an English Channel on dirt at Oaklawn Park (note his improved race at Churchill Downs in Nov 2nd time turf).  His 3yo\'s Titletown Five, WTC, and Oxbow are better than anything he has had on the Triple Crown trail in a decade.  He has had a few horses pop one big race (ie, Flying First Class) but these are showing a renewed life for DWL in the Triple Crown chase.

Been watching this transformation also since the Breeders\'s cup...It\'s like a 9 year old claim that all of a sudden starts kicking out big numbers..In his defense he always gets expensive horseflesh, the only difference is he is winning with them this year...

I don\'t think you all have been paying enough attention.  He\'s started showing up with good horses again because he\'s been getting good horses again.  Much of it can be attributed to this Kelly fellow who either leased or bought part of Calumet farm.

Lukas has had similar runs for a couple of months over the last few years, especially a couple of years ago at Oaklawn. It will be interesting to see whether it carries on over the summer.

It\'s not like this is the only owner that has given him horses, he has always gotten top horses every year and most times he does nothing with them..The past year is a turnaround becuase he is actually winning with these horses.
