Title: Pennsylvania Derby - Live Ground?
Post by: mkram on October 27, 2012, 06:32:58 AM
I noticed that the turn information is in italics.  Was that day done with live ground?  Thanks.

Yes, we have a glitch which unfortunately results in live ground being shown incorrectly in italics on occasion. We\'ve tried to create a program to alert us when this occurs, but human intervention can upset this program check inadvertently which is what appeared to have happened here.

What is \"live ground\"?

Live ground means we have an observer who watches all races at the given track and gathers information for us including:
1. run-up distance--distance between gate and when electronic timer is triggered;
2. hand time--hand time of race from gate to wire;
3. path info--where horses ran on turns;
4. wind direction and velocity;
5. other weather effects--i.e., rain races 1-4, etc.
6. rail placement--distance temporary turf rails are out from inner rail;
7. trip notes--anything before or during race which may have affected performance;
8. track maintenance or lack thereof.

That\'s basically it. But other situations can arise. A track person conveys this information to us for every race at the track he or she is responsible for.
