SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Wagering was halted several minutes before Saratoga's ninth race on Monday when the New York State Racing and Wagering Board steward mistakenly hit the button that closes wagering.
Carmine Donofrio, the racing board steward, said he walked into the office where a bank of televisions show the races and he saw a field of horses breaking from the gate. Believing it was the ninth race at Saratoga, he hit the button that closed wagering even there were still at least two minutes to post.
Bettors both at the track and at simulcast outlets around the country were unable to place a bet for the final two minutes before the race.
If you check the red board room, the winner was a lock on the sheet numbers and was top selection on analysis. I was watching for odds to drop and when they stayed at 3 to 1 I felt it was a generous price and could not get a bet in on line or by phone with 3 minutes to post.
What a bunch of lightweights running the game!
Edgorman,
Even better I was sitting with Steve Byk who was astonished by the 3/1 price especially after Michael Trombetta just left his table (he had the 9 in the race) and said Saltzman\'s horse is a monster if he runs his race no one can touch him.
Imagine the lay off and batch betting money that was left out of the pool, 100\'s of thousands!

Ed Fountaine, in today\'s NY Post, reports that Lou Raffetto was at the races
yesterday, after having attended Sunday\'s Jockey Club Roundtable. Agree with
Fountaine that it \"would not be a bad idea if Gov Cuomo and his racing advisors call
(Raffetto) in for an interview to take over the helm of the rudderless NYRA.\"
Raffetto has the credentials (most notably ran Monmouth along with Robert Kulina
during that track\'s glory days) and would be a logical choice, which in the bizarro
world of New York racing makes it very unlikely that he will be considered.

Geezus Carmine, one too many Negronis ??
what is a problem is that he pushed the button to early, which sounds awfully manual to me, he could have easily pushed that button 1 minute late, and who knows what can happen then. it all sounds archacic to me.
You mean a guy walks into a room after a pee break and hits a button...hopefully before the race is over? You\'re kidding right?
You\'d think the morons at the NYSRWB would give a full explanation of the system and why Donofrio was pushing any button. Billions of dollars going thru these wagering systems and no explanation/transparency.
This particular Clueless Clown, State Steward Donofrio refused to get on the phone to explain the results of an inquiry in which a player friend was taken down for $40k.Player was just looking to hear the stewards explanation and clarification on not contact bearing/herding out of another runner.
Cuomo should dump NYSRWB Clueless Clown Sabini and all the State people involved in overseeing NY racing. Start from scratch with some new competent people.
Guys not only was I there at The Spa the day the Clueless Clowns incorrectly DQ\'ed Allemuse in the 2nd Race that yr....but I had the horse. This has been going on for years.
Having had my Binoculars on the horse the entire way I was so perplexed I actually walked down to the scales and was asking wtf was going on. And I had like $10 and $10 not $40K.....The apology in the next days papers amde me feel so much better!!
If this were Vegas the hosed Players would be getting free Hookers and Hotel rooms for a year. Cant wait to get to get up there next week now that its a non betting facility....
So this is how they run their system. Windows close at the push of a button...or not. Wow.
Not sure why, but something about all this makes me think of \"Dr. Strangelove.\"
