Title: Preview for Saratoga tomorrow at Bel
Post by: Bigredgoer on June 29, 2012, 08:39:36 PM
What a joke of a card @Bel tomorrow, 6 maiden races, 3 bottom level claimers.  I guess because there are 2 stakes on the card it gives them license. When will the influx of \"decent\" horses purportedly on the grounds in lieu of the slot money get a chance to run??

Same old story at NYRA

Bigred,

Inventory of horses for SPA reported to be better than ever. Many outfits sitting back in wait and pointed for SPA condition book.

In their everlasting attempt to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, more SPA days added.SPA meets will never be like unmatched perfect 4 weeks of yesterday. Lust for revenue drives NY Racing since NYRA got in financial trouble years ago. With current slot money, that no longer the case, meet should be 5 weeks tops. Will see tons of grass racing and unfortunately too many cheap races that do not belong at SPA.

With demise of Cali, SPA undisputed king of racing in spite of Clueless Clowns in control.

The \"Cuomo NYRA Board\" to be revealed any day and should be interesting.

Miff:

Saratoga used to be the \"August Place to Be\". It long ago leached in both
directions, to July and September. Doesn\'t seem to be much effort to put the
Genie back in the bottle.

That being the case, I would really not be surprised or disappointed to see
Saratoga open on July 1 and race through Labor Day.

Optimally, racing would be held 5 days per week (Thursday - Monday), 9 races
per day, run 10 on Sat and Sun.

From a simple business standpoint, running more dates at a facility where
there are larger crowds is quite sustainable.

Bee,

The 5 days a week creates a bad financial situation for NYRA and many of its employees(with slots, dont know now) The personnel cost of putting on the Spa meet rather staggering relative to other NY meets.

5 days of Spa racing good, imo but doubt the money side would be able to handle it.The problem with running thru Labor Day creates big back to school problems for many and has been under review, esp since handle/attendance fall off rather dramatically that last week.

Many cronies love that last quiet week before Labor Day.Would like to see Spa close after Monday, pre Labor Day weekend, and re-open Friday, with a bonanza type racing cards for weekend at Belmont thru Labor Day Monday. They would have to \'save\' a few stakes type races for this.
