Title: Melbourne Cup
Post by: P.Eckhart on November 03, 2003, 04:57:32 AM
Jardines Lookout (Timeform 117) looks to be bit of value at 50/1. Widely regarded as a paragon of inconsistency. On his day, however, this 6yo gelding is one of the best stayers around. Ran on to be 7th in this race last year under a v.bad trip and has been prepped for another shot at it. Godolphin\'s Mamool (Timeform 124) is the fav but is plenty short at 11/2 in a competitive 24 runner handicap. Head to head they are one apiece. By sheer weight of numbers an Aussy horse will probably prevail, but if JL is in the mood to run, Daryll Holland will go very close and 50/1 seems a cheap buy.

He\'s won at the distance, which has to be an important consideration when the race is almost 2 miles. I\'m inclined to think Mr Prudent has a big chance, & don\'t see why Piachay can\'t get a small piece at 100-1. The problem, however, is that it\'s about 3 hrs to post in the biggest race in the world, & I can\'t link up to an audio, let alone video, feed to the race. I\'ve already tried Sports927 & Radio Australia. Any suggestions?

P.S. Thanks for the interesting link in your other post. I sure would have liked to have had such a rating on the Santa Anita turf course last week.

Good luck with Mr Prudent, big chance if he can repeat.

You will have to join ($7.00 a month?) but you can watch (and bet the Melbourne Cup...payoffs may be based on US money pool only ) at www.youbet.com. Post time is 11:10pm eastern (7th race). You need a broadband connection to really enjoy the video feed. The turf is rated good and Mummify(ML5 to 1) is scratched.
I just watched the 5th over there at 5 furlongs for $86,000 and it is a straight run. What was different/strange is the horses broke up into two groups ..one group ran along one rail and the other group along the other rail. Barrabba Road won at 4 to 1.

Thanks to both of you. Just as strange to me was the police type light on the starting gate, the number of runners who got ready for this marathon by running on Sat., & the fact that the announcer gives each runner a minimum of three calls. Good luck.
