Title: Possible strike starting Friday at Belmont
Post by: Lost Cause on June 05, 2012, 08:13:24 AM
Lots of posturing from the union for a strike that would really hurt the betting.  Temps have no idea how to punch in tix on their own

Successful union extortion plot?

\"Local 3 claimed NYRA was seeking a 30 percent reduction in wages and health benefits.\"

I guess you don\'t bother getting both sides of the story.  I\'m sure if your boss came in and said he wanted to cut your wages and benefits by 30% you\'d say \"sure, right away!\"  And by some MIRACLE they found the money to pay these guys.  What a shock.  Too bad they couldn\'t outsource the jobs to India.  Judging by your post you\'d probably be okay with that.

You know how long this has dragged on?  Why don\'t you blame NYRA for letting this potentially blow up their biggest day of the year?  Why don\'t you look at what these NYRA doofus morons have been pulling out of there in salary while running it into the ground.  What do you think the NYRA guys are getting in terms of benefits, pensions, etc.  Their deal is better than anything I will ever see.  That\'s what I would call extortion, extorting the public and taking money for screwing everything up.  The electrical and other guys who actually WORK and make it go deserve their pay.  The idea that you could side with NYRA here is mindblowing, especially considering everything you know about what\'s been going on there over the last few years.

If my boss wants to come in and cut my wagers, he can come in and cut my wages.  If I don\'t like it I can either A) Swallow the shit sandwich, B) Explore other opportunities.  It\'s his company, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it and honestly I couldn\'t give a damn what his salary is.   More than once I have been in a situation in my life where I didn\'t like my work and wages.  I persistantly looked for other opportunities, found them, and improved my situation.

You may, but I don\'t support the \"Gimme-Gimme Society\".

HUGE difference between the many proud and hard-working union members in
this country, and those who simply have their hand out.

Please can the scripted nonsense you picked up from overpaid, overprivileged
corporate executives and other overhead types...or is it from Rush? Class warfare
has no place amongst handicappers, anyway -- gambling on horses is measured by
ROI...not PhD, CEO, or IQ.

Sekrah - Did you just win a recall election in Wisconsin and you\'re real name is Walker? This game is put on by many who are paid well below what many of us recognize as an acceptable standard of living wage(and many have no recourse) and all these are doing is seizing a bargaining chip. Perhaps if NYRA would have taken their contract demands seriously this would be a non item. Your beef should be equally with NYRA. They are the real culprit here. Your complaints are shallow and selfish and may you find yourself shut out many times at Belmont Saturday.

To keep it in a horseracing perspective...You guys have to have dealt with the many unionized tellers at the OTB\'s and the racetracks before..Some of these guys are getting paid 80K to take a piece of paper and slide it through a machine and if there is something wrong with the slip you filled out you\'re not getting any help from any of them.  A lot of them are nasty and rude and I have spoken to some of the managers and they tell me there is nothing they can do and the tellers know it.

Not against Union\'s as many of my family memebers and friends are in Unions but I am not a proponent of the union when it turns into extortion which is seemingly all too familiar.  I believe unions were meant to protect workers from employer abuse but I think a lot of unions have turned it around to be the abusive ones now.

Teacher\'s union in NYC is another example as a teacher can\'t be fired for seemingly anything..

You can\'t compare municipal unions like teachers to tellers at the track.  And you are completely ignoring the fact that the union guys were being asked to take a 30% combined hit on money and benefits.  In this scenario you believe the union was ABUSIVE?  Wow.  If anything NYRA was extorting the union guys because they know how hard it is to get a job and they figured the union guys would be desperate enough to take the deal.

And by the way, that\'s exactly what happened at the Meadowlands.  The new owner bought the place and the only way he went through with it was by getting the unions to make concessions (pay cuts, etc.) and the union did it.

You\'ve probably had negative experiences with people in service industries who are NOT in any union.  From the \"horseracing perspective\" - in any place I\'ve ever gone to regularly to play I\'ve been able to make friends with a few tellers and I rarely have any problems.  It\'s like anything else.
