Title: What does everyone think about the Travers?
Post by: kaufmanjsk on August 23, 2011, 08:40:28 PM
Hey guys~ The Travers is coming up this weekend with Uncle MO making an appearance coming off a strong workout and was supposed to be the one to Win the Derby but bailed the day of. You have Coil a horse trained by Bob Baffert coming off a sharp workout and winning The Haskel. And Stay Thirsty is 2 for 3 at Saratoga coming off a nice win in the Jim Dandy.. Any Thoughts?

Depending on weather, if you like Stay Thirsty you have to like Ruler on Ice.  As for Baffert, it\'s a maybe...don\'t really care about a workout...he had his doubts before the workout and they are probably still legitimate doubts after it.

Unless \"Irene\" speeds up, the rain will not get there until Sunday.

Agree wiith ST and ROI; Saratoga\'s 1 1/4 Is a demanding distance so its no coincidence that horses that run well in the Belmont are strong factors in the Travers. I will toss Shack and Coil, both will bounce IMO.

Looking for a bomb to use in triples. Anyone have an opinion on who will outrun their odds?

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Did you see Badgett\'s colt run his second consecutive 9 furlong race in about 10 days and win today?  Had the fastest number of anyone in the race, didn\'t bounce and paid off decently despite the lack of rest.  Horse for course AND distance.

Sheets aren\'t up yet but thinking I really like Shackleford here.Coil had everything his way at Monmouth while Shack went against the grain .Will have to see how the sheets look but for longshots I want to see how Moonshine Mullin and Raison De\'tat stack up.Don\'t see Mott putting that horse in here if he didn\'t expect a big move forward.

I\'m on the same horse you are Mike (sorry in advance)..
Might change after I see the sheets but I like Shack here for all the reasons you stated.  Everyone went on and on about how MTH was not favoring speed and shack ran every step of the way there up front and nearly held on.  Now he comes into what seems like a paceless travers with coil seemingly going to be closest to the pace. I\'m betting on them going out slow early as coil\'s jock thinks he can run over shack at anytime but then realizing he can\'t due to the poly to dirt bounce and shack being one tough son of a gun up front.  Not bad to at least think you have a single who will be around 6/1 on a big betting day, getting him home will be the other problem..

Moonshine Mullin jogged this morning(Wed) and looked spectacular from a  physical
standpoint...looks even better than when he went into JD

After looking at the sheets this race looks a lot more tricky than I thought it would be.Shackleford still looks like the horse to beat to me but the other horses to use are a surprise.
I have to start somewhere so I\'m going to start off by leaving out the horses coming into this off new tops(Coil,Stay Thirsty,Moonshine Mullin,Malibu Glow) and Bowman\'s Causeway is too slow.Rattlesnake Bridge comes in off a top but it was a smaller forward move than the others and he has been rested longer.
Of the remaining horses(Shackleford,Ruler On Ice,Rattlesnake Bridge,Raison D\'Etat,and JW Blue) I have to say JW Blue looks like the outsider even though A Dutrow has been on fire and after the way his no shot filly ran last week in the Alabama nothing would surprise me.That leaves me with Shackleford and Ruler on Ice as the main contenders with Rattlesnake Bridge and Raison D\'Etat the sneaky live horses.
When it comes time to bet I\'m going to have to decide whether to key off Shack or ROI and then think about turning it around trying for a homerun and key off RB or RD.

This Raison D\'etat intrigues me at a bit of a price. Still eligible for a N1X Mott and the Juddmonte team decide to enter here and I am willing to bet the horse couldn\'t be doing any better. He received some very slow fractions to run at in his last and was still green in the stretch. I just cant seem to find it in me to wager on Ruler, Shack, or Thirsty. Going to load up and hope to fill my wheelbarrow. Good luck to all!!
