Does anyone have any suggested keys for the carryover Pick 6 at the Spa?
Albany:
You picked a tough day to go Sixing. Four of the six races in the sequence are
for maidens; the first race in the sequence is for 2YOs and has 5 first time
starters.
Wondering why NYRA wouldn\'t take one of the first two (non-maiden)races and plug
them into the sequence...
New hot trainer Frank Pancho Martin has two in the sequence...
Wondering what Crist\'s take on the P6 will be in his DRF blog. He will likely
make a mild protest about the diminished quality of racing at Saratoga, but will
not utter a discouraging word about his old pal Charles \"Haywire\" Hayward.
Journalistic advice to the publisher -- if you are not going to call a spade a
spade and say CH has done a poor job, at least give him an opportunity to explain
why he has not been able to do a good job. I mean ten races carded, five maiden
on ANY day of the week is unacceptable.
Now its time for my yearly plea to NYRA. For Saratoga 2012, try an experiment.
Only two types of NYB races to be run at the Spa -- stakes and MSW. No other
races restricted to NYBs to be carded. Give NYBs a purse enhancement and a weight
allowance.
Richie,
I attempted to post a blog on DRF about how bad last Saturday\'s card was, 6 maiden and 2 NW1 plus the 11th race fiasco.
Gave Senor Campo a pretty good knock as racing secretary and surprise they never posted it !!!

Tough situation...you\'ve got to approach it philosophically.
With all the unknowns this could be a day of chaos. If it is, there is a good chance no one will hit the 6, so you might want to wait for the carryover.
If you HAVE to bet the 6, play it instead as if the chalk and form will hold up and you may hit it if they do. Use a smaller amount of money and be ready for tomorrow if the day collapses around you.
Personally, I will be looking for the effect such crowd indecision will have on individual race plays. In other words, the 3-1 shot that goes off 9-2 because no one is sure.
If you want to see better cards at the Spa - here\'s an better experiment. Close Aqueduct for two months. That\'s the root cause of spreading things so thin at NYRA tracks. Seems silly to blame Hayward and Campo without mentioning this.
Good luck with the Pick Six. I have enough trouble picking ONE. HP

HP:
With all due respect, I do not think there is a horse shortage on the NYRA
circuit; to the contrary I think there are too many cheap, inconsistent
and infirm-- in a word, slow -- equines on the circuit. Too many unqualified
stallions and unremarkable broodmares on the farms.
I will repeat myself ad infinauseum. If you write races for cheap NYBs,
those are the kind of horses you are going to have on the grounds to draw your
races from. Why would a trainer from New Jersey or Maryland ship in to NY for the
winter to stable and race if (s)he knows that nearly 1/2 the races will be
written for NYBs?
The inner dirt meet was a decent meet to bet on (of course no comparison to GP)
until 3 or 4 years ago.
More intrigue was added recently when NY Gov and 2016 Presidential candidate
Andrew Cuomo intimated that he would not oppose the development of non- Native
American casinos in NY state. The Resorts World people immediately embraced this
development, but I can not see this helping NY racing without legislation under
which casino gambling is surcharged to the benefit of racing.
Bottom line re Hayward: When you have a guy like Frank D, afflicted (as I have
been) with equihippicitis for more than 40 years, saying that he is staying
away from the races, someone has to take notice.
