Title: Today's Derby Preps
Post by: Dana666 on April 16, 2011, 08:45:21 AM
Toyota Blue Grass
Doesn\'t seem like a serious Derby prep to me, unless you are speaking of the Colonial Derby. I would suggest watching the weather and track conditions carefully; speed might be decent there today, as cold and rainy weather tend to tighten up the Polytrack.

I\'m giving a long look to Maker\'s new acquisition, Joes Blazing Aaron, not only for Maker\'s rep. with horses he takes over, but this race has a lot of very ploddy beasts, and if Joe were able to get an easy lead, his chances would go up.

Obviously, there\'s nothing wrong with Santiva. Brilliant Speed\'s turn of foot is impressive as well; I don\'t know how effective it will be at a mile and and eighth, but he may bounce back today with a strong effort.

There are some other nice horses here, but they seem like grass types. Crimson China impressed me, and  Wilkinson comes out of perhaps the toughest Derby prep so far, the Louisiana Derby (the Santa Anita Derby was a joke, the Florida Derby was very weak, maybe the Wood will turn out to be strong???, the Rebel was pretty weak overall, but so far the La Derby was the best field of 3 year old\'s assembled, I think), so maybe give Wilkinson another chance. King Congie\'s a decent animal, too. Not too excited about this race.

Arkansas Derby
I\'m actually pretty excited about this race and will give along look to Nehro. He seems to be maturing and growing into his frame, and I love his pedigree; he\'s related to some nice ones, Cool Coal Man and Mine Over Matter. Lots of upside and lots to like. I will take a shot against The Factor. I\'m not impressed with too many of the others, and think some of them are distance challenged like JP and Sway Away.

I\'m not sure what happened to Brethren in his last, maybe just a bounce, but something went really wrong there - he seemed to have a lot of potential before that start. Not sure what\'s coming today.

I always liked the Factor, but I think he caught an incredibly weak field and a super speed biased track in his last - he is classy, but I\'ll take a stand against him today. Only Alternation catches my eye of the rest of these colts.

I might look at some kind of pick four with Nehro and Albergatti; I can only take Albergatti\'s presence here as a positive sign, something like that may work. Good luck to all.

OK. By the way, I just bought the t-g\'s and it looks very tough to come up with the Maker horse Joes Blazing Aaron in the Blue Grass -- he\'s really slow. But front runners and inside does look good at Kee. That race is a scramble now for me so I\'ll focus on Oaklawn.

I\'ll be curious to see what the #7, Truman\'s Commander, does in the Arkansas Derby.  Interesting horse at a huge price.
