Title: 3rd Try at the SPA this meeting
Post by: SilkySullivan on August 31, 2010, 08:50:32 AM
A bunch of horses entered over the next few days are running for the third time this meeting.  Anyone have any thoughts on how horses doing this tend to perform.  3 tries seems like a lot to me, even for runners who are legitimate SPA lovers.  Some of them ran early in the meet on off going when rained off the turf.  Just curious if anyone has a view how this affects performance.

We just saw Dutrow bring a horse back in 3 days to win.  It can be done but I don\'t see how anyone could make a blanket statement saying it\'s a good or bad move.  There are so many factors that play into it.  Some trainers are better at it than others.  If the prior two efforts were big efforts one would assume it would be tough to expect another big one.

I look at the trainer and the horse.  Trainers who have won this meet on short rest are dangerous.  If the guy hasn\'t won a good enough % on short rest during his career, I\'d pass.  If you have an established short rest winner like Rick Dutrow, Carlos Martin etc, handicap the race as if the horse is live & use the other factors like TG #s etc.  Here\'s another trainer who is good at < 2 weeks rest who is under the radar with that move-Seth Benzel.
