Title: Wide Mikey
Post by: miff on June 06, 2010, 09:00:37 AM
\"Mott, a Hall of Famer, got his first Triple Crown race win with Drosselmeyer. On Sunday morning, Mott said that victorious jockey Mike Smith joked with him, \"Now I know why you used me. You wanted me to stay wide.\" Drosselmeyer was three paths wide on the first turn and four paths wide on the far turn\"

Good win by Smith, but he benefitted from a horrific ride on Fly Down from Velazquez..

Still trying to figure out how he let Drosselmeyer by him in the first place.

3w on the first turn, 4w on the far turn, first at the finish line.
All\'s well that ends well.

Small,

Agree, when they are running that slow, it hardly matters.

Nice touch by Iron Mike giving a shout out to the recently retired Mig while
galloping back to the finish line.

Listening to the back and forth between Bailey and Smith on the ABC telecast,
cant help but thinking that JDB is out of a TV job as soon as the much more
likeable Smith hangs up his tack.

Congrats to HOF trainer William Ichabod Mott. A lot of younger horseplayers, and
East Coast horseplayers who did not have access to midwestern racing before the
days of extensive simulcasting, do not realize how successful this man has been
at all venues and with all types of runners. Before he hooked up with Paulson and
Firestone and WinStar, this man was a leading trainer at a lot of tracks in the
midwest, playing the claiming game and getting a lot of run out of some homebred
\"mustangs\" (his term, not mine) he had for Michigan owner Farid Sefa.

While maybe not as driven as Lukas or Pletcher, Mott has horsemanship skills which
put him in the elite class with Whittingham and Jerkens.

Can\'t recall ever hearing a bad word said about Mott, which is more than I can say for most of them.
